The 15th-ranked Ohio State field hockey team opened its 2006 season with a 4-2 victory at No. 11 Boston College Saturday at Newton Campus Turf Field in Newton, Mass. The win marked the first season-opening victory for Ohio State since 2001. The Buckeyes are 1-0, while BC is 0-1.
Senior Saskia Mueller scored two of the Buckeyes’ goals, with classmates Curlyne Wynn and Lauren Kruse netting the other two. Sophomore Linda Haussener had a career-high three assists. In the opening game of the year, Haussener doubled her career assist total after registering three in her entire freshman season.
Boston College scored early in the game at 8:39 to take a quick lead on a goal by Kathleen Murphy. Wynn (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/North Eastern College) evened the score at 1-all when she found the back of the cage unassisted after breaking through the Eagles defenders in the circle at 27:01.
The game remained tied heading into the intermission with BC holding a slight 8-7 edge in shots. Freshman OSU goalkeeper Lindsay Quintiliani (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) made one save in the first half while BC’s Julia Berkowitz had five.
The Eagles notched another quick goal in the opening minutes of the second half when Crystal Frates deflected a shot from Lauren Parks for a 2-1 lead at 37:42.
OSU responded with three unanswered goals in the last 15 minutes of the game, all set up on passes by Haussener (Baden, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Baden), for the 4-2 victory. Mueller (Zuerich, Switzerland/Gymnasium Unterstrass) scored two goals off of penalty corners within a minute of each other to put the Buckeyes in the lead at 3-2. She tallied her first goal at 56:10 to tie the score, and then notched the game-winning goal at 57:11. Ohio State put the game away with another goal on a penalty corner when Kruse (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) found the back of the cage at 60:24.
Overall, the Buckeyes out-shot BC 20-14, with Wynn firing a team-high seven shots. Ohio State also had a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Quintiliani made four saves to pick up her first collegiate victory. BC’s Berkowitz made eight saves but registered the loss.
Ohio State next travels to Newark, Del., to participate in the Blue Hen Classic Sept. 2-3. The Buckeyes face host school Delaware Saturday and then take on Penn Sunday. Both games will be played at 11:30 a.m. OSU opens its home schedule Sept. 10 with a noon game against Pacific at North Turf Field.
