COLUMBUS, OH After stealing the show at the Penn State Nationals last weekend, Ohio State’s team of weight throwers followed up their strong effort with another show-stopping performance on day one of Notre Dame’s Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
Led by sophomore Matt DeChant, the Buckeyes placed four athletes in the Top 12 of the weight throw final. DeChant followed up his third place endeavor at PSU with a sixth place finish at 18.10m (59’ 4.75”). Patrick Whalen and Max Mays finished back-to-back in ninth and 10th position with throws of 17.21m (56’ 5.75”) and 17.19m (56’ 4.75”). Sophomore Tyler Branch settled for the No. 12 spot with a toss of 16.84m (55’ 3”).
Junior Brandon Woodard took fourth in the 500m dash in a scorching time of 1:04.06. John Ealy and Christopher Olinger secured two Top 10 finishes in the 5000m run for Ohio State — Ealy’s eighth place finish at 14:23.43 is the third best time in the Big Ten so far this season. Olinger’s time of 14:27.27 earned him the conference’s fourth best time on the year to go along with tenth place.
