AUBURN, Ala. Chad Balyo finished first in the 3000m steeplechase and the 4x400m relay team set a regional qualifying time on their way to a second-place finish as the Ohio State men’s track and field team concluded competition at the Tiger Track Classic Saturday night in Auburn, Ala.
Balyo, a junior from Springboro, Ohio, finished in a time of 9:11.01, the third-best time in the Big Ten this season. Buckeye runners hold four of the top six steeple times in the conference.
The 4x400m relay team of Matt Comer, Stephen Robinson, Thomas Murdaugh and Curtis Leuenberger set the second-best time in the Big Ten with their time of 3:08.18. Auburn Elite finished just ahead of the Buckeyes in 3:08.12.
Patrick Whalen picked up where he left off at the end of the indoor campaign, putting together two Top 10 performances. The senior placed fifth in the shot put at 17.18m (a regional qualifying mark) and eighth in the discus with at 51.30m. Whalen’s shot set the top mark in the Big Ten this outdoor season his discus throw is the conference’s second-best.
Two Buckeyes finished in the Top 10 of the pole vault. Senior Bryan Chard took third at 4.90m and sophomore Alan Dague was sixth with a vault of 4.45m. Chard’s mark is the conference’s sixth-best.
The Scarlet and Gray’s success in the field continued in the javelin, as Patrick Filipi placed sixth at 55.66m. Junior Stephen Robinson took seventh in the long jump at 6.80m and freshman Thomas Davis was ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 54.33m.
Robinson followed up his performance in the long jump with a ninth-place finish in the 200m dash at 21.70, the conference’s fourth-best time this season.
Jonathan Francois, a junior from Piscataway, N.J. was fifth in the 110m hurdles with a sprint of 14.59, while sophomore Daniel White finished ninth in the 800m with a time of 1:53.18. Iowa’s Adam Hairston took first at 1:50.56.
Ohio State returns to action April 8 and 9 at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. before hosting rival Michigan in the outdoor “Dual” April 11 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes defeated the Wolverines 85-77 at the indoor meet Jan. 17 in Ann Arbor.
