Senior Bryan Koniecko nabs second weekly honor in a row

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior tri-captain Bryan Koniecko has been recognized as the Big Ten Player of the Week Tuesday by the Big Ten Conference for the second-consecutive time and fourth overall this season. He earned the honor after winning two singles and three doubles matches last weekend as the No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team improved to 28-1 overall and a perfect 10-0 in conference play to claim its fourth-consecutive Big Ten regular season title.

Koniecko, currently ranked third in singles in the Campbell/ITA Tennis Rankings, defeated No. 50 Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin, 6-1, 7-5, Sunday to help improve the Buckeyes’ home win streak to 87-consecutive matches. Koniecko is now 23-4 against nationally-ranked opponents this season and has an overall record of 34-4. The win against Michalicka puts Koniecko in a tie for third on the all-time career singles wins list with former Buckeye Roger Smith (1983-86) with 126 victories.

In doubles, Koniecko improved to 28-3 this season with three match wins. In his last match of the weekend, paired with senior tri-captain Ty Schaub, Koniecko swept Wright State’s Brad Krick and Pip Rehg, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles to become the program’s all-time career doubles wins leader with 119 victories.
