COLUMBUS, Ohio The No. 3 Ohio State men’s tennis team improved its winning streak to 16-consecutive matches after defeating No. 53 Indiana, 7-0, Friday at the IU Varsity Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind. Senior tri-captain Steven Moneke, who was awarded his third Big Ten Athlete of the Week this season Tuesday, claimed both the singles and doubles matches against the Hoosiers to improve the Buckeyes to 7-0 in the Big Ten and 11-0 on the road for the 2008-09 campaign.
The Buckeyes (24-1; 7-0 Big Ten) evened the all-time series record to 40-40 against Indiana (11-12; 3-4 Big Ten) and under head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes are 9-2 against the Hoosiers, winning the last nine meetings. In Big Ten play, the Buckeyes are 98-5 in their last 103 league matches, including post season play. With the victory, Ohio State has now shut out 12 of the last 16 opponents to stay at the top of the conference with an undefeated league record.
A half an hour into the match, doubles play was suspended for 55 minutes due to rain causing singles matches to be contested indoors.
Moneke paired as the 39th-ranked doubles duo in the country with junior Justin Kronauge and defeated Santiago Gruter and Jeremy Langer, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles, putting the Buckeyes ahead 1-0 against Indiana. At No. 2 singles, No. 8 Moneke downed Gruter in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and improved his overall record to 30-4. Moneke, a two-time ITA All-American, has 131 career singles wins and is now two victories away from breaking the career singles wins school record of 132 set by former Buckeye Vince Ng (1999-03).
At No. 2 doubles, Bryan Koniecko and Shuhei Uzawa improve to 13-1 overall with an 8-4 win against Lachlan Ferguson and Stephen Vogl in the first finished match of the day. Koniecko adds his career doubles wins total to 115 and is two shy of tying former Buckeye Scott Green (2003-06) for second on the all-time list.
Matt Allare and Chase Buchanan, paired for just the second time together, downed Maxime Armengaud and Will Kendall, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles. The Buckeye duo is 2-0 this season.
Moving indoor in singles, the Buckeyes stayed perfect winning each match in straight sets. No. 18 Kronauge won his 14th-consecutive match after defeating Langer, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. Kronauge, who grabbed his 100th career singles against Michigan last weekend, is now 31-6 overall and is tenth on the all-time wins list.
At No. 6 singles, No. 100 Allare kept his streak alive for the 2009 spring dual season with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Vogl. Allare is now 22-0 in dual-match play winning 22-consecutive matches. Allare becomes the fifth Buckeye this season to hit the 25-win mark with a 25-2 overall record.
Koniecko, ranked fourth in the latest ITA Division I polls, downed No. 85 Ferguson, 6-1, 6-4, at the top of the singles lineup. Along with Kronauge, Koniecko improves to a team-high 31 victories (four losses) and 123 career singles wins, which is four shy of passing former Buckeye Roger Smith (1983-86) for third on the all-time list.
Freshman Buchanan defeated Armengaud, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4 singles. Buchanan is now 3-3 overall in his first season with the Buckeyes. At No. 5 singles, No. 91 Balazs Novak won his 15th-consecutive match after downing Kendall, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. Novak is now 29-4 overall with a perfect 12-0 record at No. 5 singles.
