COLUMBUS, Ohio – The second-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team (24-2, 7-0) shut out No. 73 Wisconsin (9-11, 3-4), 7-0, Friday, extending its winning streak in Big Ten matches to 73. The Scarlet and Gray have won 125 of their last 130 league contests, including postseason play.
The Buckeyes improve to 40-32 all-time vs. Wisconsin. With the victory, head coach Ty Tucker is now an unblemished 21-0 against the Badgers, dating back to 1999 – his first year as coach.
Freshman Blaz Rola, the fifth-ranked player nationally, clinched the victory for Ohio State with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Wisconsin’s Billy Bertha at No. 2. Rola becomes the first Buckeye to amass 30 singles wins on the year. The Ptuj, Slovenia, native is 17-3 in dual matches and 10-1 at the No. 2 spot.
The Scarlet and Gray have now been victorious in 55 out of their last 56 road matches, dating back to the 2005-06 campaign. As a Top 25 team, the Buckeyes are 188-12 (.940) in their last 200 matches.
In doubles action, Chase Buchanan and Shuhei Uzawa, the nation’s 66th ranked team, quickly won their match at No. 2 against Petr Satral and Ricardo Martin, 8-1. The Buckeye duo also moves to 8-1 as a pair, all at the No. 2 position. Overall Buchanan is 23-7 in doubles while Uzawa, a senior co-captain, is 17-3.
Ohio State’s highest ranked tandem in the lineup, senior Matt Allare and redshirt-freshman Peter Kobelt claimed the doubles point with an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 vs. Marek Michalicka and Bertha. The nation’s 12th ranked team rebounded after their loss to Notre Dame Wednesday, moving to 21-7 overall and 12-4 at the No. 1 position.
Balazs Novak and Rola came back from being down 7-6 on serve to force a super-tiebreaker against Rod Carey and Fredrik Ask. Basically alternating points throughout the tiebreaker, the Buckeye tandem won 12-10 to sweep doubles play.
In singles, Novak, a senior co-captain, downed Martin in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1, to put the Buckeyes up 2-0. Novak improved to 24-5 overall and 20-3 in dual singles.
Allare, the nation’s 43rd ranked player, downed Satral, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 for his 16th consecutive victory. Allare moves to 28-3 overall and carries a 19-1 mark in dual play.
Rola’s victory clinched the shutout for the five-time defending Big Ten champions.
In other singles competition, Buchanan earned his 26th win, moving to 12-1 at No. 1 on the season by defeating Michalicka, 7-5, 6-2. The Big Ten Athlete of the Week is 21-2 in dual singles.
At No. 5, Devin McCarthy handed Ask a 7-6, 4-6, 10-3 defeat for his 25th win on the season. McCarthy, a redshirt-sophomore, also captured his 20th dual singles win and improves to 10-1 at the No. 5 position.
Redshirt-freshman Nelson Vick garnered his 20th singles victory on the season by beating Carey, 7-6, 7-6, at No. 6. He is 10-1 in dual play and 7-1 at No. 6.
Up next, Ohio State travels to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on the No. 24 Minnesota Golden Gophers at noon Sunday. The Buckeyes are 12-3 under Tucker and 25-38 overall vs. the Gophers, with wins in the last nine matches.
