COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes played host to Wichita State, South Carolina and Denver in the 2016 ITA Kick-Off Weekend, sweeping the Shockers in their morning match up.

The Buckeyes fought back from an early doubles loss by Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen to win the doubles point behind some excellent play. Chris Diaz and Hugo Di Feo defeated Sergio de Vilchez and Austin Williams of Wichita State 6-3 while Ralf Steinbach and Martin Joyce defeated Tin Ostojic and Jocelyn Devilliers 6-4 to clinch the point.

Ohio State responded to the hard fought doubles point by not dropping a single set in all of singles play. Torpegaard bounced back to defeat Ostojic 6-4, 6-0 and Di Feo bested Miroslav Herzan 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Martin Joyce continued his emphatic play to clinch the Buckeye victory by besting Edward Stoica 6-1, 6-3.

In the second match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Denver defeated South Carolina 4-3 in an over three-hour match. South Carolina took the early doubles point where Alex Fennel and Thomas Mayronne beat Denver’s Henry Craig and Alex Gasson 7-5 to clinch. Singles play came down to court one, with both teams tied 3-3 before it was decided. In the end, Denver’s Diogo Rocho defeated Alex Fennell 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 to move on to the qualifying match.

The Buckeyes are set to face Denver at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Varsity Tennis Center in the Qualifying Match for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The winner will qualify for the event to be hosted by Virginia Feb. 11-14 in Charlottesville.

Ohio State is also hosting the Toledo Rockets at 5:30 tomorrow night after the conclusion of the ITA qualifying match.
