COLUMBUS, Ohio The nationally-ranked Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team topped No. 22 Missouri, but lost to No. 14 Indiana in a tri-meet in Bloomington, Ind., Saturday afternoon. The No. 10 Buckeyes defeated the Tigers, 246-54, and fell to the Hoosiers, 163-137. Ohio State is now 7-1 on the season and 0-1 in Big Ten competition.
The Buckeyes opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Andrew Elliott, Felipe Travesso, Andrew Bretscher and Joel Elber finished in 1:28.31 and were just edged out of first by Indiana’s squad that finished in 1:28.18.
Juniors Stefan Sigrist and Andrew Olson followed with second places in their respective events. Sigrist was runner-up in the 1,650 freestyle in 15:21.08, while Olson was second in the 200 freestyle in 1:37.34. George Markovic and Jacob Busch finished third and fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:39.01 and 1:39.10, respectively.
A pair of sophomores earned Top 3 finishes in the 100 backstroke. Itai Chammah took second in 49.68, while Phil Seleskie was third in 49.71.
Travesso picked up the Buckeyes first individual win of the meet. The senior took first in the 100 breaststroke in 53.79 and remains undefeated in the event during dual competition. Sophomore Quincy Lee led a 1-2-3 finish for Ohio State with a win in the 200 butterfly (1:47.45). Matthias Sigrist took second (1:47.48) and Austin Mudd finished third (1:48.13).
Sophomore Elliott Keefer captured his third win of the season in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 1:58.27, while Farra led another Buckeye 1-2-3 finish in the 400 individual medley, taking first in 3:54.61. Niksa Roki finished second (3:54.73) and Mudd took third (3:55.69).
Buckeye divers were led by junior Burkley Showe and sophomore Sean Moore on the springboard events. Showe was second on the one-meter with a score of 346.30 and won the three-meter competition with 396.00 points. Moore was third on the three-meter with 335.00 points.
Ohio State closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Elber, Bretscher, Travesso and Olson finished in a time of 1:20.75.
Other second-place finishers for Ohio State were Markovic in the 500 freestyle (4:22.85) and Bretscher in the 100 butterfly (47.89).
The Buckeyes take a week off before hosting a two-day quad-meet, Jan. 30-31. Ohio State takes on Big Ten rivals Penn State, Michigan and Northwestern in the co-ed meet at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Day one of competition begins at 6 p.m. and day two starts at 12 noon.
