COLUMBUS, Ohio – Incoming freshman Monica Velasquez-Stiak is set to become the newest addition to the Ohio State synchronized swimming team in 2014-15. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native is a member of Scottsdale Synchro and has been a member of multiple U.S. National Teams, most recently earning a spot on the 2014 U.S. Junior National Team.
“We expect Monica’s experience as a member of the U.S. National Team will play a significant role in her immediate success as a Buckeye,” Holly Vargo-Brown, Ohio State head coach, said. “ She is not only a gifted athlete, but also very focused on pursuing excellence in her academic career as a Buckeye. We are very excited to welcome her to Ohio State in the fall.”
Velasquez-Stiak was most recently named to the 2014 U.S. Junior National Team, USA Synchro announced May 5. The squad is set to compete at the U.S. Open in Henderson, Nevada, July 15-19, and the 14th FINA World Junior Synchronized Swimming Championships in Tampere, Finland, July 30 – August 3. Earlier this year, Velasquez-Stiak finished in second place in figures at the 2014 U.S. Junior National Championships.
In 2013, she also earned a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team, taking first place in the team competition at the UANA Pan American Championships. At the 2013 U.S. Junior National Championships, she placed fifth in figures and finished seventh in the team event. Velasquez-Stiak is on the varsity swim team at Shadow Mountain High School and was recognized with the Citizenship Award and is a member of the Society of Women Scholars and National Honor Society.
The Scarlet and Gray concluded the 2014 campaign with six first-place and two second-place finishes, including capturing the U.S. Senior National Championship April 12 in their final event of the season.
