COLUMBUS, Ohio The No. 19 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 12 Navy, 8-6, Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Ohio State is 1-1 on the year, with Navy improving to 2-0.

The Buckeyes were down 3-0 at the end of the first quarter but fought back to tie the game at 3-all in the second. The Midshipmen scored back-to-back goals to take a two-goal lead before Mario Ventiquattro’s tally with three seconds left in the half brought Ohio State back within one (5-4) heading into halftime. Navy scored the first two goals of the second half to go ahead 7-4 but the Buckeyes responded with back-to-back goal, including a Ventiquattro tally with one second left in the quarter, as Navy lead 7-6 through three quarters. The Midshipmen had the only goal in the fourth quarter with 2:34 remaining and held the Buckeyes scoreless for the 8-6 final.

Senior captain Joel Dalgarno had a team-best three goals and four points for the Buckeyes vs. the Midshipmen. He now has 175 career points, tying for second place in the record books with Kevin Buchanan (2005-08). He is eighth with 99 career goals and fifth with 76 assists. Senior Jeff Ryan added a goal and two assists, Ventiquattro had two goals and junior James Green added two assists in the game.

Ohio State returns home to host Bucknell at noon Saturday. The game is scheduled for outdoors at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, but could be moved indoors at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in the case of inclement weather. Seating is limited inside the WHAC, so fans are encouraged to pre-purchase tickets to secure a spot should the game be moved inside.

In the opening quarter, Navy opened the scoring at 6:03, as Patrick Moran scored on a 3-minute non-releasable extra-man opportunity. Tim Paul added a goal at 4:41 to extend the lead to two and Brendan Connors scored with 33 seconds left in the quarter for a 3-0 Navy lead at the end of one. Navy outshot the Buckeyes in the quarter, 8-3.

The Buckeyes tied the game with three goals to open the second quarter. Green found Ryan for a score at 12:29 and back-to-back goals by Dalgarno, assisted by Ryan at 10:42 and Green at 7:20, knotted the score at 3-all. Connors regained the lead for the Midshipmen with a rebound goal at 5:00 and Andy Warner followed with a goal 53 seconds later after a Mids’ faceoff win. With time winding down, Ohio State wrapped up a long possession with Ventiquattro’s goal with three seconds left in the half. Navy carried a 5-4 lead into halftime. In the second quarter, Ohio State had nine shots and Navy had seven. The Buckeyes won 4-of-6 faceoffs in the quarter.

The Mids scored twice in the first 3:34 of the third quarter to extend their lead to 7-4. Paul scored at 13:49 and Bruce Nechanicky added a goal at 11:26. The Buckeyes scored twice in the final 1:36 to again cut the Mids’ lead to one (7-6). Dalgarno scored at 1:36 coming out of a Buckeye timeout. After a clearing attempt by Navy failed, the Buckeyes were able to get the ball up-field and Ryan found Ventiquattro, who scored with just one second left in the quarter. The teams combined for 22 shots in the stanza, with Ohio State ahead, 12-10.

The teams were scoreless in the fourth quarter until Nechanicky scored at 2:34. The Midshipmen had eight shots in the quarter and held Ohio State to just two. 

Buckeye goalie Brandon Freeman had a career-high 12 saves in the game while suffering the loss. Navy goalie Matt Coughlin had six saves.

Each team won eight faceoffs in the game, with Nick Carr going 7-4 on the day for the Buckeyes.
