COLUMBUS, Ohio Despite a career-best 15 saves from junior goalie Brandon Freeman, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team lost to Air Force, 9-6, in a snowstorm Saturday in USAFA, Colo. The loss drops the Buckeyes to 6-6 on the year, with a 2-1 ledger in Great Western Lacrosse League play. Air Force is 5-6 and 3-1 in conference action.

The Buckeyes close out the weekend with a conference game at Denver at 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday.

Air Force scored the only goal of the first quarter and after Ohio State took a 2-1 lead early in the second, the Falcons scored three in a row to take a 4-2 lead into halftime. The teams traded goals early in the third quarter to make the score 5-3. Ohio State then got goals from seniors Joel Dalgarno and Doug Ruhnke, who each had two goals in the game, to tie the game at 5-all with 9:20 left in the third. The Falcons then went on a four-goal run to pull away, including three tallies to close out the third quarter.

Air Force scored the only goal of the first quarter when K.J. Landgraf found the back of the net. Freeman was strong in the quarter, making seven saves as the Falcons outshot the Buckeyes, 12-6.

Ohio State got back-to-back goals from Ruhnke at 11:22 and James Green at 8:01 of the second to put Ohio State ahead, 2-1. Landgraf then set up Ridge Flick for two goals at 7:45 and 5:25, tying the game at 2-all and then regaining the lead for the Falcons. Flick found Griffin Nevitt for a goal with .5 seconds remaining in the quarter, sending Air Force into halftime with a 4-2 lead. Air Force again outshot Ohio State, 12-6, with Freeman making five stops.

The Buckeyes outscored the Falcons, 3-1, in the first 5:40 of the third quarter to tie the game at 5-all. Freshman Brock Sorensen tallied at 11:37 but Flick responded for the Falcons just nine seconds later after AFA won the ensuing faceoff. Dalgarno had an answer 1:02 later, scoring unassisted at 10:30 and Ruhnke followed with a goal at 9:20 to knot the score at 5. The teams remained deadlocked until Nevitt found the back of the net with 4:33 left in the quarter, as Air Force carried a 6-5 lead into the final quarter. Shots were 9-7 in favor of the Buckeyes in the stanza.

The Falcons scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to pull away from the Buckeyes. Landgraf scored twice in less than a minute, with goals at 12:41 and 11:45, followed by a tally from Adam Paranka at 9:40 to push the AFA lead to four (9-5). Dalgarno scored the final goal of the game with 3:20 remaining. The Buckeyes outshot Air Force, 12-6, in the quarter.

In the game, Air Force outshot Ohio State, 37-34. Freeman played 60 minutes, with a career-best 15 saves. Brian Wilson had 10 saves for the Falcons.

Air Force kept the Buckeyes scoreless on five man-up chances in the game, including two in each of the first two quarters. The Falcons were 0-for-1 on EMO opportunities.

Postgame Notes
Dalgarno has a team-best 28 goals, 18 assists and 46 points this season. Dalgarno, who became the second Buckeye all-time (and in 30 years) to cross the 200-point mark for his career, now has 121 goals and 210 points, ranking second in both categories. He is two behind first-place Terry Gilmore in the career goals race. He is on an 18-game point streak (47-29-76).

Ruhnke is on a four-game scoring streak (4-2-6).

Jeff Ryan and Mario Ventiquattro each had 13-game scoring streaks ended in the game vs. the Falcons.

Freeman’s previous best was 14 saves, set against UMBC earlier this year.

The game had been scheduled for Friday afternoon, but was postponed to Saturday because of wintry weather conditions around the Academy.
