COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State seniors Kelsey Mitchell and Stephanie Mavunga were each named preseason All-Big Ten and Mitchell was selected as Big Ten preseason Player of the Year as announced by the conference on Monday.
As a team, the Buckeyes were picked to win the conference by both the coaches and the media.
Mitchell, the two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and three-time All-American is set for what could be a record-break senior season. She is already the school and Big Ten all-time leader in three-point field goals and is just 30 behind the NCAA record. Mitchell has scored 2,553 career points in 104 games and is just 265 points away from Jantel Lavender’s school record of 2,818.
Mavunga earned second team All-Big Ten honors in her first season as a Buckeye despite missing 13 games. She was the most efficient rebounder in the country, pulling down nearly 20 percent of the available rebounds and also became the third Buckeye in school history to average a double-double for the season, notching 11.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
The Buckeyes have been practicing for a little over three weeks and will host their first exhibition game this Sunday, Oct. 29 against Ashland at 2 p.m. at the Schottenstein Center. Ashland was the NCAA DII National Champion last season. The Eagles only loss last year came at the hands of the Buckeyes in an exhibition game as they were 37-0 in 2016-17.
