COLUMBUS, Ohio – Miles Avery, Ohio State men’s gymnastics head coach, has agreed to a new five-year contract, Heather Lyke, OSU’s associate athletics director for compliance services, announced Wednesday. The contract was effective July 1 and runs through June 30, 2010. Avery, who completed his eighth year at the helm in 2005, has led the Buckeyes to an NCAA title and three Big Ten championships.
“I’m very excited I have been entrusted with this program for the next five years,” Avery said. “As I’ve done during my first eight years as the head coach of the Buckeyes, I will continue to do my best to bring us championships.”
“We are thrilled to have Miles at Ohio State for the next five years,” Lyke said. “We are excited about both the academic and athletic achievements of our men’s gymnastics student-athletes and it is indicative of the positive impact Miles has on these young men. Our program is consistently among the nation’s elite. Not only has Miles had an impact at Ohio State but he is actively involved in the sport of men’s gymnastics at a national level. He is a true asset to our university.”
Avery has been the head coach of the Buckeyes since 1998 after serving nine years as an assistant coach at OSU. Under his guidance as the head coach, OSU has produced one NCAA title (2001), three Big Ten championships (2001, ’02, ’05), three NCAA all-around championships and 46 All-America honors. This past season, the Buckeyes won the Big Ten championship and finished second at the NCAA championships, as the squad compiled a program-record eight All-America awards. Avery is a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2001, ’02, ’05) and was named national coach of the year in 2001 for the second time in his career.
In addition, Avery has coached U.S. National Team members since 1986 and served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1996, 2000 and 2004. He coached Paul Hamm to the gold medal in the all-around at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, as he became the first U.S. male in history to win the title.
