COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore Mikael Torpegaard led the Buckeyes to a pair of victories last week over Top-25 teams and has been named the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. This is Torpegaard’s first B1G Athlete of the Week honor.
After knocking-off No. 8 Arthur Rinderknech of Texas A&M on Feb. 14, Torpegaard and Rinderknech met again last Friday at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center. This matchup went unfinished but Torpegaard won the first set 6-4 and was leading 3-2 in the second. On Sunday, Torpegaard opened his day by teaming with Herkko Pollanen to down the top-ranked doubles team of Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson of Florida 6-3. He then capped the day by clinching the 4-3 victory for the Buckeyes with a 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2 victory over Hidalgo at No. 1 singles.
Torpegaard leads the team with a 14-2 singles record and is 8-0 at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. The Denmark, native has not lost yet in 2016. He also has a team-best 11-4 mark in doubles.
The Buckeyes return to action this Friday when they open Big Ten play at home against No. 21 Penn State.
