Sophomore Sergio Somma had a team-best two goals, while classmate Peter Boyd had three points, with a goal and two assists. Junior Mathieu Picard and freshman Taylor Stefishen each had a goal and an assist, with sophomore John Albert posting two assists.

Ohio State improves to 17-8-3 on the year and 10-7-3-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Alaska now is 12-10-6 and 10-9-5-3. Alaska won the opener, 4-2.

The Buckeyes return home to host No. 1-ranked Notre Dame next weekend. The teams will face off at 8:05 p.m. Friday (Feb. 6) and at 2:05 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 8).

Ohio State led 2-0 three minutes in to the game and 5-0 at the end of the first period. Somma opened the scoring at 1:42, Picard found him at the right post with a cross-crease pass. Boyd had the second assist on the goal, Somma’s seventh of the year. Fairbanks native Hunter Bishop tallied 1:17 later, scoring on a rush down the left side, with Corey Elkins sending him into the Nanook zone. At 4:29 freshman Taylor Stefishen scored his second of the year, putting in the rebound of a Chris Reed shot, with Reed’s d-partner Matt Bartkowski picking up the second helper with the Buckeyes on the power play. At 10:31 Picard redirected a Sims shot from the point, putting Ohio State ahead 4-0 and chasing starting goalie Chad Johnson. Boyd had the second assist on the goal.

At 11:42 Buckeye sophomore Corey Toy was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct for cross-checking. The Buckeyes were solid on the long penalty kill, holding the Nanooks to just five shots on goal, while putting three on net themselves. Just 20 seconds after the major expired, Boyd scored to make the score 5-0. Stefishen sent the puck up the boards from the Buckeye zone and John Albert picked it up near the OSU blueline. He rushed into the Nanook zone and held the puck until the UA defenseman dropped to the ice to block the shot. Albert was able to slide the puck between the defenseman and goalie to Boyd, who tapped it in for his third point of the period. Ohio State put 14 shots on net in the period, with goalie Dustin Carlson stopping all eight Nanook shots. The Buckeyes converted their only power-play chance and stopped UAF on two chances (including the major), with a third carrying into the second period.

There was no scoring in the second period for the second-consecutive night, as the Buckeyes outshot the Nanooks, 12-7. Alaska did not score on the carry-over power play.

In the third, Somma scored his second goal of the game at 4:33. With the Buckeyes on the power play, Albert brought the puck up ice and dropped it to Somma, whose wrist shot got through UAF backup goalie Scott Greenham. Alaska scored twice in the final 2:26, with Kevin Petovello scoring at 17:34 and Brandon Knelsen following with a goal at 17:59. Alaska put 16 shots on net in the period, with Ohio State getting eight on net. The Buckeyes were 1-for-3 on the man advantage and Alaska was 0-for-1.
