COLUMBUS, Ohio Sophomores Dustin Carlson and Shane Sims have been named CCHA Goalie and Defenseman of the Week, respectively, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday. The Buckeyes won the Ohio Hockey Classic championship last weekend, with Carlson and Sims earning all-tournament team honors.
Carlson, from Forest Lake, Minn., stopped 51-of-52 (.981) shots he faced in the Ohio Hockey Classic last weekend in Value City Arena in Columbus. Against Army in the first round Friday, Carlson allowed just one goal, making 27 saves as the Buckeyes won, 6-1. He posted his fourth shutout of the season in the championship game vs. Clarkson Saturday with 24 saves. Carlson and the Buckeyes were a perfect 8-for-8 on the penalty kill during the tournament. This is the second weekly league award for Carlson, who was named the national player of the month in November. Carlson ranks in the Top 16 in the nation in goals-against average (2.04/16th), save percentage (.932/9th) and winning percentage (.786/8th).
Sims had three assists, including helpers on both game-winning goals, a +3 rating and three blocked shots in the Buckeyes’ two OHC victories. Against Army Friday, Sims had a career-high tying two assists, with helpers on back-to-back goals 2:10 apart in the first period, and was +2. Saturday he had the primary assist on Hunter Bishop’s game-winning tally and was +1. Sims is on a six-game point streak (1-7-8) and has two assists in two of his last three games. He has matched his goal, assist and point totals from last year with one goals, 10 assists and 11 points.
The Buckeyes have picked up seven league player of the week accolades this season. Forward Zac Dalpe has two rookie of the week honors, defenseman Matt Bartkowski was also named the league rookie of the week, Corey Toy has been named defenseman of the week to join Carlson’s first goalie of the week honor.
The Buckeyes, on an eight-game winning streak, return to CCHA play with a series at Bowling Green this weekend. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday in BGSU Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio.
