Buckeyes lose tiebreaker, will play twice Saturday beginning with a morning match vs. Minnesota

COLUMBUS, Ohio After a morning fog delay, the inaugural Big Ten Match Play Championship got under way Friday at the par 72, 7,268-yard Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla. The delay did not seem to bother Ohio State or Wisconsin as they battled to a 3-3 tie with Wisconsin advancing on a tiebreaker.

The tiebreaker was the numbers of holes the teams won their matches. Ohio State totaled two holes in their victories while Wisconsin won by a three-hole margin to advance to the quarterfinals and play Michigan State Friday afternoon. The Buckeyes are off until Saturday, when they will face Minnesota and Penn State.

Freshman Alex Redfield, competing in his first collegiate tournament, was in a tight match the entire way, halving his match with the Badgers’ Craig Cerbens. Sophomore Michael Cress, who was also playing in his first tournament this season, halved against Patrick Duffy, making the match even at 1-1.

After trailing on the back nine, sophomore Brad Smith came back to win 1 up in his match with Jordan Elsen, putting the Buckeyes in the lead 2-1.

However, Wisconsin won the next two matched to take a 3-2 advantage. Junior tri-captain Brad Wright was defeated 3 and 1 by Tyler Obermueller. Sophomore Bo Hoag took his match to the 18th hole but finally succumbed to Danny Zimmerman, who won 1 up.

Senior tri-captain Vaughn Snyder would tie the match with a 1 up win over Dan Woltman, bringing the score to even at 3 apiece.

In the other morning matches, Northwestern defeated Penn State, Purdue defeated Minnesota and Michigan defeated Iowa.
