Buckeyes defeat Penn State by a decisive 5-1 score
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team finished the inaugural Big Ten Match Play Championship with a resounding 5-1 victory over Penn State Saturday afternoon in Coral Springs, Fla. The Buckeyes went 1-2 overall in the event played at the par 72, 7,268-yard Heron Bay Golf Club.
Freshman Alex Redfield fell in his match to Chad Bricker, 3 and 2, but it was all Ohio State from there on out as the Buckeyes won the next five matches.
Sophomore Michael Cress started the trend defeating Jim Markovitz 2 and 1. Classmate Brad Smith and junior tri-captain Brad Wright’s matches each went 18 holes, but in the end they came out victorious. Smith won 2 up against T.J. Howe, while Wright outlasted Nick Archambeault, 1 up.
Sophomore Bo Hoag won handily, beating Tommy McDonagh 6 and 5 and clinching the victory for the Buckeyes. Senior tri-captain Vaughn Snyder finished his undefeated weekend by defeating Kevin Foley 3 and 2.
Following the conclusion of the Big Ten Match Play Championship, Snyder was selected to the All-Tournament Team by the coaches. He was a perfect 3-0 in his matches.
In the title match, Indiana defeated Michigan to win the inaugural Big Ten Match Play Championship.
