Ohio State faces Penn State Saturday afternoon in final match of tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team had another tough morning Saturday at the inaugural Big Ten Match Play Championship, falling to Minnesota, 4.5-1.5, on the par 72, 7,268-yard Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla.

For his second-consecutive round, sophomore Michael Cress halved his match, this time against Minnesota’s Yu Katayma, while freshman Alex Redfield was defeated by Thomas Campbell, 4 and 3.

Sophomore Brad Smith posted a 3 and 2 loss to Derek Chang and Victor Almstrom clinched the Golden Gophers’ victory by defeating junior Brad Wright, 5 and 3.

Sophomore Bo Hoag battled for 18 holes, but came up just short again as Andy Paulson defeated him 1 up.

Senior tri-captain Vaughn Snyder tallied the lone Buckeye victory with a 2 and 1 win in his match against Ben Pisani making the final score 4.5-1.5 in Minnesota’s favor.

The Buckeyes face Penn State Saturday afternoon to conclude their play in the Big Ten Match Play Championship.

In semifinal action, Michigan defeated Illinois, as Indiana cruised to victory over Michigan State setting up Michigan vs. Indiana for the championship. Iowa defeated Northwestern and Purdue defeated Wisconsin in the other morning matches.
