COLUMBUS, Ohio–Phillip Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), the No. 1 singles player for the Ohio State men’s tennis team, lost in the second round of the 2001 NCAA Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Metz entered the tournament with a No. 36 national ranking. He ended his season with a 37-11 record on the year after the 6-4, 5-7, 2-6 loss to Duke’s Ramsey Smith, who entered the tournament seeded in the 9-16 range and ranked No. 20 nationally. Only the Top 8 players were individually seeded in the NCAA Singles tournament.

Metz was scheduled to play at 11 a.m. Friday but rain forced the second round indoors causing delays of over three hours. Metz began play about 2:20 p.m.
