%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio–Phillip Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), the No. 1 singles player for the Ohio State men’s tennis team, lost in the second round of the 2001 NCAA Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.%^$

%^$Metz entered the tournament with a No. 36 national ranking. He ended his season with a 37-11 record on the year after the 6-4, 5-7, 2-6 loss to Duke’s Ramsey Smith, who entered the tournament seeded in the 9-16 range and ranked No. 20 nationally. Only the Top 8 players were individually seeded in the NCAA Singles tournament.%^$

%^$Metz was scheduled to play at 11 a.m. Friday but rain forced the second round indoors causing delays of over three hours. Metz began play about 2:20 p.m.
