COLUMBUS, Ohio – Phillip Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), the No. 1 singles player for the Ohio State men’s tennis team, won his opening match Thursday to begin play in the 2001 NCAA Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The singles tournament, hosted by the University of Georgia, runs through Monday, May 28.

Metz entered the tournament with a No. 36 national ranking. He improved to 37-10 on the year with a 6-2, 3-1 victory over University of Georgia junior Chad Carlson (24-5).

Carlson, ranked of No. 47, was forced to retire in the second set because of injury. Playing on his home court in the team tournament Wednesday, Carlson scored a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 decision in the No. 4 singles position over Tennessee’s Adam Carey to clinch Georgia’s fourth national title.

Metz will battle Ramsey Smith (Duke) Friday. Smith is a 9-16 seed in the tournament and is ranked No. 20 in the nation. He defeated Takeshi Itoh of New Mexico 6-4, 6-1 to advance.
