COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-3 overall, 3-0 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball squad received a combined 41 kills from Andy Cole (21, a career-high) (Fr., Glendale, Wis.) and Tom Trantow (20) (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) in a 3-1 (30-25, 30-26, 23-30, 32-30) victory at Mercyhurst (2-3, 0-1). Laker Nate Keegan had a team-high 17 kills for Mercyhurst with Dave Schmidl adding 15 and Austin Siewert 11.

In OSU’s game one 30-25 win, the Buckeyes hit .429 with only four errors to .280 for Mercyhurst. The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead with a 30-26 win in game two despite being out hit .400 to .250. The Lakers hit .387 in game three to win 30-23 as OSU hit .276. Ohio State survived game four by a 32-30 margin. The Buckeyes out hit Mercyhurst .429 to .400 in the final game.

For the match, Mercyhurst out hit Ohio State .371 to .342. OSU had a 66-59 advantage in kills. The Lakers had a three to one advantage in ace serves while the Buckeyes had 13 service errors to 11 for the Lakers. Defensively Ohio State out dug Mercyhurst, 33-25 with OSU’s Stuart Katz (Fr., Port Washington, N.Y.) recording a career-high 15 digs. At the net, the Lakers had a 22 to 9.5 margin with Mercyhurst’s Schmidl having a match-high nine blocks with three solos and six assists.

Ohio State returns home at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 16 to face ninth-ranked Penn State (5-3) in St. John Arena.

BUCKEYE NOTES

Stuart Katz had a career-high 15 digs against the Lakers. His previous best was 10 against Clarke. Tom Trantow recorded a season-high eight digs against Mercyhurst. He had six in two previous matches. Andy Cole’s 21 kills against the Lakers set a career-high. He previously had 19 in the second Springfield match. Cole has had double-figure kills in his last four matches.
