COLUMBUS, Ohio – The unranked Ohio State (8-4 overall, 4-0 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball squad needed five games to upset 12th-ranked Ball State (8-4, 3-3) 3-2 (26-30, 33-31, 30-28, 26-30, 15-11) in Muncie, Ind., Friday night. OSU’s Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) scored a team-high 18 kills for the Buckeyes. Mark Greaves (Fr., Fenton, Mo.) recorded a career-high 17 kills with Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis.) adding 14 and Adam Pedersen (Jr., Muskego, Wis.) 10. BSU’s Kyle Weindel posted a match-high 21 kills for the Cardinals with Josh Zuidema adding 16, Zoran Grabovac 13 and Matthew Denmark 12.

Ball State broke a 3-3 tie in game one with a kill by Josh Lee, an OSU error and a service ace by Denmark to take a 6-3 lead. The Cardinals had a 28-23 lead before a Ball State error cut the margin to 28-24. A Denmark kill set game point at 29-24. OSU kills by Cole and Greaves cut the Cardinal lead to three at 29-26. A kill by Zuidema gave BSU game one by a 30-26 score. The Cardinals hit .353 for the game to .194 for the Buckeyes.

OSU held the early lead in game two, 4-1. The Buckeyes took the lead to five at 12-7 on a Cardinal error. Ball State went on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 14. After 10 more ties, the game was deadlocked at 31-all. A kill by OSU’s Scott Spurlock (So., Stow, Ohio) gave OSU a 32-31 lead. A Buckeye block by Greaves and Pedersen ended the game at 33-31 to tie the match at one-all. Ohio State hit .324 for the game to .205 for Ball State.

Game three remained close with 14 ties, the last at 26-all. A Ball State error and an OSU block by Greaves and Spurlock to give Ohio State a 28-26 lead as Ball State called time out. A Spurlock kill set game point for Ohio State at 29-26. Ball State responded with a Denmark kill and with an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to 29-28. Spurlock pounded another kill to close the game at 30-28 for Ohio State giving the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead in the match. For the game, Ball State out hit the Buckeyes, .419 to .314.

Tied at 17-all in game four, kills by Grabovac and Delgado and an ace serve from Keith Schunzel opened a 20-17 Ball State lead. The Cardinals held the lead and with a kill from Weindel won the game, 30-26 to tie the match at two games each. Ball State hit .140 for the game to .122 for the Buckeyes.

Ball State broke a three-all tie with an OSU error and a Delgado kill to take a 5-3 lead in the 15-point, game five. A kill by Greaves and a Ball State error tied the game at five. Kills by Delgado and Trantow moved the score to six-all. An OSU error and a Cole kill made it seven-all. A kill from Weindel and a Cardinal error tied the game at eight. Kills by Greaves and Denmark made it nine-all. A Denmark solo block and a Greaves kill tied the game for the eighth time at 10-all. A Buckeye service ace by Mark Lehman (Sr., Galena, Ohio) and a Greaves kill opened a 12-10 Ohio State lead as Ball State called time out. Delgado’s kill cut the OSU lead to 12-11. A Greaves kill, his sixth of the game, made it 13-11. A Greaves-Pedersen block made it 14-11 as Ball State called time out. With Ohio State serving match point, Trantow’s kill gave OSU a 15-11 game five win and a 3-2 victory in the match. OSU hit .615 in the game to .400 for Ball State.

For the match, Ball State out hit Ohio State, .275 to .265 and had an 81-74 advantage in kills. Each squad recorded five ace serves while Ball State gave up 13 service errors to 10 for the Buckeyes. Defensively, the Cardinals had a 48-42 margin in digs in the contest. BSU’s Schunzel had a match-high 16 digs for the Cardinals with OSU’s Mark Peckham (Jr., London, Ontario) have a team-high 13 digs. Ball State had an 11.5 to 10 advantage in team blocks. Cardinal Denmark collected a match-high six blocks with a solo and five assist blocks. OSU’s Pedersen had a team-high five assist blocks for the Buckeyes. Ball State setter Schunzel collected a match-high 68 assists while OSU’s Peckham had 60.

The Buckeyes return home to host 15th-ranked Indiana-Purdue at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25. The Buckeyes then return to the road where they face 14th-ranked Loyola-Chicago Friday, Feb. 28 and Clarke Saturday, March 1.

BUCKEYE NOTES

Mark Peckham had a career-high 13 digs in the win at Ball State. He also had a season-high six kills and hit a season-high .750 (6 kill, 0 errors, 8 attempts).

Mark Greaves recorded a match-high 17 kills against the Cardinals. His previous high was 16 against Penn State.

Scott Spurlock started the final four games in the match and equaled his season-high of eight kills, adding four assist blocks and a dig.

Tom Trantow’s five digs raises his career total to 526 and moves him into a tie for 10th on the OSU career digs list with Dan Mihacevich (1994-97)

With five assist blocks tonight, Adam Pedersen now has 262 assists and is now sixth on the OSU career assist blocks list. He moved out of a tie with David Frette (1989-91) with 262 and has passed Angel Aja (1997-200) with 264.

Ohio State had season-highs of 74 kill, 67 assists and 42 digs in the match.
