COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-3) men’s volleyball squad could not hold a 2-0 lead over Springfield College (6-2) and fell 3-2 (27-30, 20-30, 30-28, 31-29, 15-11) to the Pride. Springfield’s Greg Lardo (Sr., Hamburg, N.Y.) scored a match-high 25 kills for the Pride with Brandon Mueller (So., Bartlett, Ill.) adding 14. OSU’s Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) scored a team-high 23 kills with Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis.) adding a career-high 19 kills and Brett Hamilton (So., Rockville, Md.) contributing 10. The Buckeye loss gave Springfield a split of the two-match series. OSU defeated Springfield 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-23) Friday night. Ohio State will now complete a four-match home stand with a 7 p.m. Friday contest against Clarke College to open play in the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. The Buckeyes then travel to Findlay on Saturday at 7 p.m. for another conference contest.

Ohio State with seven kills in 10 attempts from Cole held off the Pride in game one for a 30-27 win. Springfield held an early 10-8 lead, but a Cole kill and a Mark Peckham (Jr., London, Ontario) ace tie the game at 10. The Pride broke an 11-all tie with a Lardo kill and an OSU error to take a 13-11 lead. Two Trantow kills and two Pride errors gave OSU a 15-11 lead. Springfield responded and tied the game at 23. Three Springfield error made it 26-23, OSU. Cole’s seventh kill of the game closed the game at 30-27. OSU hit .276 to .250 for the Pride.

Ohio State held a seven-six lead when a Adam Pedersen (Jr., Muskego, Wis.) kill, a Trantow ace and a kill by Cole opened a 10-6 Buckeye lead. OSU continued to build on the lead and with a Trantow kill won the game, 30-20, to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .444 in the match to .273 for Springfield.

Game three saw 11 ties with the largest lead of the game, a 19-16 margin by Springfield. Tied at 23, a Springfield error and a Trantow kill put OSU ahead, 25-23. A Lardo kill cut the margin to 25-24. A Pride error made it 26-24. Lardo responded with a kill to cut the margin to 26-25. Trantow and Peter Fillat (Fr., Florence, Italy) traded kills to make the score, 27-26. A Jacob Voorhies (So., Rochester, N.Y.)-Tucker Short (Sr., Brockport, N.Y.) block tied the game at 27. OSU took a 28-27 lead with a Cole kill. A Buckeye error tied the game at 28. A Lardo kill gave Springfield a 29-28 lead at game point. Voorhies, Clay Spiegel (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and Matt Smith (So., Midlothian, Va.) combined for the game-winning block to end the game at 30-28, Springfield. Ohio State hit .226 for the game to .189 for Springfield.

Game four was played like game thee, very close with 16 ties. Tied at 24, two Lardo kills, one by Mueller and an OSU error opened up a 28-24 Springfield advantage. The Buckeyes responded with four points to tie the game at 28. Pedersen began the run with back-to-back kills. A Trantow kill and a Pride error made it 28-all. A Buckeye error gave Springfield a 29-28 lead. OSU’s Trantow tied the game with a kill at 29-all. A Buckeye error and a block by Lardo, Fillat and Short ended the game at 31-29, Springfield, tying the match at two games each. Ohio State hit .182 for the game to .136 for Springfield.

In the 15-point, fifth game Springfield opened up a 2-0 lead with kills by Mueller and Lardo. A Trantow kill cut the margin to 2-1. Two OSU errors and kills by Fillat and Spiegel made it a 6-1 Pride lead as OSU called time out. A Hamilton kill made it 6-2. Mueller responded with a kill at 7-2. Trantow cut the margin to 7-3 with a kill. A Voorhies-Short block pushed the lead to five at 8-3. Hamilton’s kill cut the margin to 8-4. A Buckeye error made it 9-4. A kill by Cole made it 9-5. Fillat made it 10-5 with a kill. Mike Wauligman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) responded with a kill to set the score at 10-6. A solo block by Pedersen cut the margin to three at 10-7. Mueller put the lead at four with a kill at 11-7. Two Pride errors and a Hamilton-Peckham block made it 11-10. Springfield went up 12-10 with an OSU error. Cole cut the lead to 12-11 with a kill. A Spiegel kill made it 13-11. An OSU error set match point for Springfield at 14-11. The Pride closed out the match with a block by Lardo, Voorhies and Short to win the game, 15-11, and the match, 3-2. Springfield hit .333 for game five to .111 for Ohio State.

For the match, Ohio State out hit Springfield, .248 to .212. The Buckeyes had a 68-61 margin in kills for the match. Ohio State collected six ace serves in the match to one for Springfield. Peckham had a match-high two aces for OSU. The Buckeyes gave up 26 service errors to 21 for the Pride. Springfield edged Ohio State in digs, 42-41. Eduardo Stawinski (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico) had a match-high 10 digs with OSU Stuart Katz (So., Port Washington, N.Y.) recording nine. OSU had a 13-12 margin in team blocks in the match. The Pride’s Voorhies (seven assists) and OSU’s Pedersen (one solo and six assists) shared match-high honors with seven total blocks each. Ohio State’s Peckham had a match-high 62 assists in the match to 50 for the Pride’s Short.

BUCKEYE NOTES

Andy Cole had career-highs of 19 kills, 41 attempts, .268 hitting percentage, five assist blocks and five total blocks in the second Springfield match. His previous high in kills was 15 against George Mason.

Tom Trantow matched his season high with 23 kills against Springfield. He had 23 kills against George Mason earlier. He now has scored double-figure kills in his last eight matches.

Stuart Katz had a career-high nine digs in the match. His previous high was seven against St. Francis.

Brett Hamilton had a season-high 10 kills against Springfield. His previous best was eight in the first Springfield match. He also had a season-high five assist blocks against the Pride.

Adam Pedersen equaled his season-high of seven total blocks with a solo and six assist blocks against Springfield. He previously recorded seven blocks (1-6) against George Mason.

Mike Wauligman equaled is career-high of three assist blocks against Springfield. He previously had three assist blocks against Clarke in 2002.

Mark Peckham had season-highs of 62 assists and nine digs against Springfield. His previous highs were 58 assists against George Mason and five digs (twice), the last against St. Francis.
