COLUMBUS, Ohio – The fourth-ranked Ohio State (20-4 overall, 12-1 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball needed 85 minutes to defeat Southampton College (14-10) in a three-game sweep (15-2, 15-12, 15-4) Friday night in St. John Arena for OSU’s 20th win of the season. The Buckeye firepower came from starters Colin McMillan (15 kills) and Rene’ Esteves (10 kills) and 15 from Pieter Olree off the bench. Southampton’s Kevin Nelmes also had a match-high 15 kills for the Colonials. Ohio State now closes out the home season with a MIVA match against seventh-ranked Lewis (21-7, 9-4) Saturday night in St. John Arena.

Ohio State opened game one with a 4-0 lead on two Southampton errors and OSU kills by Jose Rivera and Colin McMillan. The Colonials closed to 4-2 on an OSU error and an ace serve by Ben Hill, but did not score again in the game as the Buckeyes scored the next 11 points to take the game 15-2. The Buckeyes hit .500 for the game to .074 for Southampton.

The Colonials took a quick 1-0 lead in game two on an ace serve by Kevin Nelmes. Ohio State went ahead 3-1 on a kill by Pieter Olree, a Southampton error and a block by Rene’ Esteves and Greg Lehman. Two OSU hitting errors and an ace serve by Chris Kies put Southampton back in the lead at 4-3. The Buckeyes tied the match on a block by Colin McMilland and Jose Pereira and with a Southampton hitting error and a kill by Olree, OSU extended the lead to 6-4. The Colonials scored a point on an OSU error and then a kill by Nelmes and a block by C. J. Emanuelson and Peter Wawrzyniak put Southampton ahead 7-6. After an extended series of sideouts, a hitting error tied the match for Ohio State at seven, but a block by Matt Schwartz and Hill along with an OSU error put Southampton up 9-7. An OSU kill by McMillan closed the gap to 9-8, but a block by Wawrzyniak and Schwartz extended the lead to 10-8. An overpass kill and a solo block by Jose Pereira tied the match at 10, but an ace serve by Southampton’s C. J. Emanuelson and an OSU error put the Colonials up again, 12-10. OSU picked up a point on a hitting error and an ace serve by McMillan tied the game at 12. Southampton errors accounted for the final three OSU points to end the game at 15-12. The Buckeyes hit .321 for the game to .214 for Southampton.

Ohio State started game three with nine consecutive points on two kills by Phil Kerewich and Pieter Olree, a single kill by McMillan, a service ace by Angel Aja and three Southampton errors. After a sideout, OSU continued the point parade with a two kills by McMillan, a block by McMillan and Olree and two Southampton errors to raise the score to 13-0. The Colonials scored on an OSU error and a solo block by Ben Hill to make the margin 13-2. OSU reach match point (14-2) on a Southampton error, but a sideout by Nelmes and an OSU error made the score 14-3. Southampton held off three more match points and picked up point four on an OSU error before a ball handling error for the Colonials scored match point ending the game at 15-4. Ohio State hit .474 for the game to -.150 for Southampton.

For the match, Ohio State hit .394 to .107 for Southampton. OSU had the edge in digs, 30 to 19 while the Colonials had the advantage in blocks, seven to six. Each team scored four aces.
