COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a career-high 22.5 points from Adam Pedersen (Sr., Muskego, Wis.), the Ohio State (7-4 overall, 3-2 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team held on for a five-game (28-30, 33-31, 30-18, 29-31, 15-12) victory Saturday night against Loyola (7-4, 2-2) in St. John Arena. Pedersen collected career-highs of 17 kills and nine assist blocks and added an ace serve while hitting a season-high .682. Buckeye Mark Greaves (So., Fenton, Mo.) added a career-high 21 points in the match, scoring a career-high 19 kills and adding an ace serve and a solo block. Rambler James Grunst recorded a team-high 20.5 points for Loyola with 17 kills, an ace serve and five assist blocks.

Ohio State trailed 17-16 in game one when kills by Greaves and Scott Spurlock (Jr., Stow, Ohio) and a Rambler error gave OSU a 19-17 lead. The Buckeyes held a 22-19 lead when a kill from Brian Guntli and four OSU errors opened a 24-22 lead for Loyola. A Rambler error and an ace serve by Spurlock tied the game at 24. A Shawn Schroeder kill and a Rambler error made it 25-all. Errors by both teams made it 26-all. Rambler Grunst and Buckeye Greaves each recorded a kill to make it 27-all. A Buckeye error and a kill by Spurlock tied the game at 28. A kill by Loyola’s Chris Kozlarek and a block by Kozlarek and Schroeder ended the game at 30-28, Ramblers. Loyola hit .452 for the game to .192 for OSU.

With game two tied at 14, a Rambler block by Scott Greene and a Schroeder kill gave Loyola a 16-14 lead. Ohio State trailed 20-18 when a Rambler error and a Spurlock kill tied the game at 20. With a Schroeder kill, Loyola held a 27-23 margin over OSU. A Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill followed by four consecutive OSU blocks to give the Buckeyes a 28-27 lead.. The first three Buckeye blocks were by Pedersen and Andy Cole (So., Glendale, Wis.), the fourth by Pedersen and Wauligman. Mike Alesch tied the game at 28 with a kill. Schroeder’s kill gave Loyola a 29-28 lead serving game point, but a service error tied the game at 29. A Grunst kill made it 30-29 and a second game point for Loyola. Greaves responded with a kill to tie the game at 30. A Rambler hitting error made it 31-30, OSU, serving game point. A Grunst kill tied the game at 31. OSU served its second game point after a Cole kill. OSU’s solo block by Greaves ended the game at 33-31. Ohio State hit .289 for the game to .217 for Loyola.

A kill by Greaves, a block by Spurlock and Cole and a service winner by Pedersen gave OSU a 4-1 lead in game three. Leading 11-6, two kills each from Pedersen and Cole, a Pedersen-Cole block and a Rambler error gave OSU a 16-6 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the margin to 12 with a game-winning kill from Cole at 30-18. The Buckeyes hit .400 for the game to .000 for Loyola.

In game four, Ohio State tied the game at 17 with a Wauligman kill. Rambler kills by Schroeder, Greene, and Kozlarek gave Loyola a 20-17 lead. A 4-1 run by OSU from two Pedersen kills, a Greaves kill and ace serve tied the game at 22. Loyola took a 23-22 lead with a block by Alesch and Grunst. Buckeye kills by Spurlock and Greaves made it 24-23, OSU. A Buckeye error tied the game at 24. A Loyola error and a Spurlock kill gave OSU a 26-24 lead. A Buckeye error and a Schroeder kill tied the game at 26. A Wauligman kill and a Rambler error gave the Buckeyes a 28-26 lead. Kills by Schroeder and Cole made it 29-27 with the Buckeyes serving match point. A Buckeye hitting error and a block by Alesch and Grunst tied the game at 29. Two OSU hitting errors closed the game for Loyola at 31-29, tying the match at two games each. Loyola hit .300 for the game to .208 for Ohio State.

Game five opened with a kill by Loyola’s Grunst and a Rambler service error for a 1-1 tie. Kills by Spurlock and Grunst made it two-all. A Rambler service error and a hitting error gave OSU a 4-2 lead. A kill by Alesch and a Schroeder- Kozlarek block tied the game at four. Mark Peckham (Sr., London, Ontario), with a solo block and an OSU error moved the score to five-all. A Rambler service error, an ace serve by Spurlock and a Wauligman kill opened an 8-5 Ohio State margin. An Alesch kill and a block by Guntli and Schroeder cut the lead to 8-7. Kills by Pedersen and Schroeder made it 9-8. A Buckeye error tied the game at nine. A three-point Buckeye run from a Cole-Pedersen block, an ace serve by Wauligman and a Loyola error opened a 12-9 Buckeye lead. After a Rambler time out, an Alesch kill and an OSU error closed the margin to 12-11. Greaves responded with a kill to make the score 13-11. A Rambler error made it 14-11 with OSU serving match point. A kill by Alesch stopped the match point at 14-12. Alesch’s serve did not clear the net for a service error, ending the game at 15-12. Loyola hit .118 for the game while Ohio State hit .000.

For the match, Ohio State hit .237 to Loyola’s .224. The Ramblers had a 71-67 advantage in kills while OSU had a 9-4 margin in ace serves with OSU’s Cole scoring a match/career-high three. Loyola gave up 22 points on service errors to OSU’s 14. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 54-34 advantage in digs with OSU’s Wauligman and Dan Meske (Fr., Willow Springs, Ill.) sharing match-high honors with 13. At the net, OSU edged Loyola, 16-15 in team blocks. Buckeyes Pedersen and Cole each collected a match-high nine assist blocks. OSU’s Peckham collected a match-high 60 assists in the match to 55 for Loyola’s Guntli.

Ohio State will take to the road next week when they face UC-Irvine in the semifinals of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic in Springfield, Mass at 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20. OSU would then face either Springfield or Penn State on Saturday.

OHIO STATE MATCH NOTES:

This was OSU’s third, five-game match this season, winning two of three.

Dan Meske had a career-high 13 digs. His previous best was 11 against Rutgers-Newark.

Mark Peckham’s nine digs equaled his season high for the third time. He had a season-high two ace serves, which ties his career-high, set at Ball State in 2001.

Mark Greaves had career-highs of 19 kills and 21.0 points. He previously had 17 kills in two matches, the last against Juniata. His previous point high was 19.5 at Ball State in 2003.

Adam Pedersen had career-highs of 17 kills, nine assist blocks and 22.5 points. His previous highs were 16 kills (twice, last against Loyola in 2003), eight blocks (assist/total) (four times, the last against Loyola in 2002) and 19.5 points (at Rutgers-Newark in 2002).

Scott Spurlock had a season-high 13 kills and equaled his career-high of two aces serves. His previous season-high kills was 12 at Lewis and he had two aces in two previous matches, the last at Loyola in 2003.

Andy Cole had a career-high nine assist blocks in the match. His previous high was six in two matches, the last against Juniata this season. He recorded a career-high three ace serves against Loyola. His previous best was two in four matches, the last at IPFW this season.

Mike Wauligman had a season-high 13 digs with his previous high of 10 at IPFW. His season-high two ace serves matches his career-high for the fifth time.
