COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State, behind a 25-kill performance by Chris Fash (Sr., Orland Park, Ill./Lockport Township H.S.), rallied from a 2-1 Western Ontario lead to take a 3-2 victory over the Mustangs. The exhibition match, played at Genoa Middle School in Westerville, Ohio, completed a two-match sweep of Western Ontario by the Buckeyes. OSU defeated the Mustangs 3-0 (30-23, 30-23, 30-19) Friday night in St. John Arena. Joining Fash in double-figure kills were Pieter Olree (Sr., Reading, Pa./Exeter H.S.) with 18 and Greg Lehman (Sr., Galena, Ohio/Big Walnut H.S.) with 16. Luke Schram (Jr., London, Ont.) had a team-high 21 kills for Western Ontario with Mike Wilson (5th-Sr., London, Ont.) adding 13 and Jeremy Jonckheere (Sr., London, Ont.) 12.

Ohio State took a 7-0 lead in game one and never was challenged, winning 30-16. The Buckeyes hit .414 to .000 for Western Ontario with Olree recording six kills and Fash four.

The Mustangs went ahead 2-0 and led 6-1 to start game two. Western Ontario held the lead winning 30-23 to tie the match at one. The Mustangs hit .424 for the game to .200 for OSU. Schram had eight kills and Wilson six for Western Ontario.

Game three stayed close early with the teams exchanging leads until five-all. A Buckeye error and a Wilson kill put Western Ontario ahead 7-5. The Mustangs held a six-point lead (17-11) but the Buckeyes stayed close and trailed 28-24. A Fash kill cut the lead to 28-25. A Jonckheere kill set game point at 29-25. A kill by Olree and two Mustang errors cut the lead to 29-28 before a Jonckheere kill ended the game at 30-28 giving them a 2-1 lead. Western Ontario hit .414 to .303 for the game. Jonckheere had six kills for the Mustangs while Fash had 11 kills for OSU.

Western Ontario broke a nine-all tie in game for to take a 13-9 lead. The Buckeyes stayed close, tying the game five times, the last at 20 before at kill by Todd Hill (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto H.S.), a block by Hill and Mark Peckham (Fr., London, Ontario/Oakridge Secondary H.S.), a Mustang error and an ace by Mark Lehman (So., Galena, Ohio/Big Walnut H.S.) put the Buckeyes up 24-20, holding on for a 30-22 win to tie the match at two games each. OSU hit .448 for the game to -.029 for Western Ontario. OSU’s Olree contributed seven kills and Mark Lehman five for the game.

Ohio State built up a 6-0 lead in the fifth game, holding on for the 15-10 win to take the match. The Buckeyes hit .500 to -.071 for Western Ontario.

For the match Ohio State hit .362 to .176 for Western Ontario. The Buckeyes had a 73-57 advantage in kill and a 16-10 margin in blocks. OSU outserved the Mustangs nine to five and had a 30-27 margin in digs.

The Buckeyes return to regular season action next week when they travel to Muncie, Ind. to face Ball State Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m.
