COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked OhioState (8-6 overall) men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-13) decision at sixth-ranked UC Irvine (10-9) Friday night. OSU’s Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a team-high 11 points for the Buckeyes with 10 kills and two assist blocks. Anteater Jon Steller had a match-high 20.5 points for UC Irvine with 14 kills, six ace serves and an assist block.
UC Irvine opened game one with a Kevin Wynne kill and with an OSU error took a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes, with a Kevin Heine (So.-Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) kill, trailed by one at 4-3 before a six-point run by the Anteaters gave UC Irvine a 10-3 lead. The Anteaters held the lead, reaching game point at 29-21, with a Steller kill. A Buckeye kill from Jason Tobkin (So.-Fr., Fairfield, Ohio) and an Anteater error stopped two game points to cut the lead to 29-23. Mac Waite, with a kill, closed out the game at 30-23 for a 1-0 lead in the match for UC Irvine. The Anteaters hit .448 for the game to .174 for OhioState.
A Klein kill opened game two for OhioState. An OSU error and a Ben Spurlock (Sr.-So., Stow, Ohio) kill made it 2-1, Buckeyes. Anteater kills from Cole Reinholm and Steller gave UC Irvine a 3-2 lead. Two Buckeye errors took the lead to 5-2. A Klein kill made it 5-3. An UC Irvine error cut the lead to one at 5-4. Kills from Steller, Cory Yoder and Aaron Harrell gave the Anteaters an 8-4 lead. UC Irvine held the lead, reaching 28-21, with a Steller kill. An Anteater error, a Brett Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio) kill and a Spurlock-John Klanac (So.-Fr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) block cut the lead to four at 28-24. A Yoder kill set game point at 29-25. UC Irvine won the game, 30-25, with a Reinholm kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Anteaters hit .455 for the game to .324 for the Buckeyes.
UC Irvine opened game three with the first five points. Two Ryan Ammerman kills, two Wynne ace serves and an OSU error completed the run. The Anteaters held a 19-12 lead before a seven point run took the lead to 26-12. Errors by both teams moved the score to 27-13. Two Buckeye errors set match point at 29-13. A Waite kill ended the game at 30-13, giving the Anteaters a 3-0 win. UC Irvine hit .462 for the match to .000 for OhioState.
For the match, UC Irvine hit .455 to .188 for OhioState. The Anteaters had a 51-32 advantage in kills and a nine-to-two margin in ace serves. Steller recorded a match-high six ace serves for the Anteaters. UC Irvine gave up 15 service errors to 11 for OhioState. Defensively, the Anteaters had a 25-19 advantage in digs with Reinholm collecting a match-high seven for UC Irvine. At the net, OhioState had a nine-to-two margin in team blocks. OSU’s Heine (six assist blocks) and Daniel Mathews (Sr., Shorewood, Wis.) (one solo and five assist blocks) shared match-high honors with six blocks each. Anteater setter Ammerman had a match-high 41 assists in the match with OSU’s Mathews recording 28.
