COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (9-5 overall, 5-1 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball squad fell 3-0 (30-27, 30-24, 30-25) to 12th-ranked Loyola-Chicago (9-3, 6-1) Friday night in Alumni Gym. OSU’s Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) posted a match-high 17 kills and hit .467 against the Ramblers. Buckeye Mark Greaves (Fr., Fenton, Mo.) added 10 kills for OSU. Loyola-Chicago had three players record 11 kills each. They included Mike Alesch, Dan Haas and Dan Kellum.

From a 22-all tie in game one, an OSU error and kills by Kellum and Haas gave Loyola-Chicago a 25-22 lead. Buckeye kills by Trantow and Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis.) cut the Rambler lead to one at 25-24. Haas and Trantow exchange kills at 26-25. A Haas kill and a Rambler error moved the score to 27-26. Alesch’s kill and a Loyola-Chicago error put the score at 28-27 Loyola. Kills by Shawn Schroeder and Schnor ended the game for Loyola at 30-27. The Ramblers hit .378 for the game to .235 for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State held a 2-0 lead in game two before Loyola scored four straight points to lead 4-2. The Ramblers continued to build on the lead opening up an eight-point lead at 19-11. Ohio State could only cut the lead to 28-24 before a Buckeye error and a Kellum kill ended the game at 30-24. Loyola-Chicago hit .289 for the game to .162 for Ohio State.

The teams traded points in game three to a 12-all tie. Loyola took a 14-12 lead with a kill by Alesch and an ace serve from Haas. Buckeye Brett Hamilton (So., Rockville, Md.) cut the lead to one with a kill at 14-13. A Buckeye error and a block by Schroeder and Schnor made it 16-13. OSU made it 16-14 with a Trantow kill. A Buckeye error and a Kellum kill made it a four-point Rambler lead at 18-14. Loyola expanded the lead to 29-22 before a kill by Trantow, a Mark Peckham (Jr., London, Ontario) and Adam Pedersen (Jr., Muskego, Wis.) block and another Trantow kill made it 29-25. The Ramblers closed out the game with an Alesch kill at 30-25 to win the match, 3-0. The Ramblers hit .353 for the game to .242 for OSU. Loyola hit .339 for the match to .212 for Ohio State. The Ramblers had a 52-45 advantage in kills while each squad recorded four ace serves. Loyola-Chicago gave up 12 service aces to 10 for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 35-31 advantage in digs with Stuart Katz (Fr., Port Washington, N.Y.) recording a match-high nine. At the net, Loyola had a 9.5 to four margin in team blocks. Rambler Schroeder collected a match-high five assists.

Ohio State completes the two match road trip by facing Clarke College Saturday.
