COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-4 overall, 3-0 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball squad dropped a 3-1 (28-30, 30-24, 30-27, 30-25) decision to ninth-ranked (tie) Penn State (7-3) Sunday evening in St. John Arena. OSU’s Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) recorded a match-high 20 kills for the Buckeyes with Mark Greaves (Fr., Fenton, Mo.) adding 16. PSU’s Zach Slenker (5th-Sr., Dallastown, Pa.) and Keith Kowal (Jr., Reading, Pa.) shared team-high honors with 15 each for the Nittany Lions with Carlos Guerra (Sr., Tamaulipus, Mexico) adding 13.

Penn State opened a 6-1 lead in game one. The Buckeyes slowly cut the lead and with a block by Adam Pedersen (Jr., Muskego, Wis.) and Mark Peckham (Jr., London, Ontario) tied the game at 16. Another Pedersen-Peckham block gave OSU a 17-16 lead. Tied at 17, a Trantow kill, a Penn State error, a Greaves kill followed by another Trantow kill opened a 21-17 Buckeye lead. PSU tied the match at 26 off a Buckeye error. A PSU error and an Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis.) kill made it 28-26, OSU. A Buckeye service error made it 28-27. Trantow’s kill set game point at 29-27. Guerra countered with a kill, making it 29-28 but another Trantow kill ended the game at 28-26. Ohio State hit .400 for the game to .333 for Penn State.

Penn State again opened an early lead at 3-0. OSU came back to tie game two at five. An ace serve by Cole, a kill by Trantow and a PSU error made it 8-5, OSU. The Nittany Lions outscored OSU 7-5 to tie the game at 12. Kills by Kowal and Guerra and an OSU error gave Penn State a 15-12 lead. OSU would close to within one at 17-16 but would come no closer as an OSU error ended the game, 30-24 for Penn State. Penn State hit .133 for the game to .172 for OSU. Game three saw the Nittany Lions have a 19-14 lead before two PSU errors cut the margin to 19-16. A Buckeye error moved the score to 20-16. A Pedersen kill and two Penn State errors closed the margin to 20-19. A Trantow ace serve tied the game at 21. Tied at 25, a Buckeye error and a Richard Schneider (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) kill put Penn State ahead, 27-25. At Trantow kill made it 27-26. A kill by Norman Keil (Sr., St. James, N.Y.) and one by Pedersen made it 28-27. Two Buckeye errors ended the game at 30-27 for Penn State. The Nittany Lions hit .276 to .294 for OSU.

After nine ties in game four, a Kowal kill gave Penn State a 15-14 lead. OSU could not respond as the Nittany Lions built a 27-20 lead and with a Slenker kill ended the game at 30-25. Penn State hit .357 in the game to .139 for Ohio State.

Penn State hit .272 for the match to .242 for Ohio State. OSU had a 58-56 margin in kills against the Nittany Lions. PSU had a five to three advantage in ace serves with Slenker scoring a match-high three aces. OSU produced 23 service errors to 18 for Penn State. The Nittany Lions had a 31-29 margin in digs with Ricky Mattei (Jr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) recording a match-high 11. Penn State had an 11.5 to 10 advantage in team blocks in the match. Nittany Lion Kowal had a match-high six assists for PSU.

Ohio State returns to conference action next Friday when it travels to 11th-ranked Ball State (8-3, 2-2).
