COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-1) men’s volleyball team fell short in a 3-1 (13-15, 15-13, 17-15, 15-4) loss to the Cougars of Brigham Young (3-0). BYU’s Ryan Millar (28) and Ingo Lindemann (27) combined for 55 kills in leading the Cougars to their third consecutive win of the season. Ohio State countered with 24 kills by Jose Pereira and 20 from Phil Kerewich but fell short.

OSU opened game one with a 4-0 lead, but the Cougars tied the game at four. The Buckeyes went up 6-4, but again BYU tied the game at six. A block by Ryan Millar and Steve Hinds put Brigham Young up 9-8 only to have OSU tied the game at nine on a block by Colin McMillan and Angel Aja. BYU then scored on an ace by Millar, two OSU hitting errors and a block by Scott Bunker to take a 13-9 lead. The Buckeyes scored the next four points with an ace by Chris Fash, an BYU hitting error and blocks by McMillan and Jose Pereira and McMillan and Fash to tie the game. Another solo block by Fash put OSU up 14-13 and serving game point one. After an exchange of side outs and OSU block by Pereira and Rene’ Esteves was the game point at 15-13. The Buckeyes hit .196 for the game to .000 for BYU.

In game two OSU broke a 4-4 tie with three consecutive points to go up 7-5, but three OSU errors helped BYU tie the game at 7. With the match tied at 8, five BYU errors were for OSU points, putting the Buckeyes up 13-8. The Cougars produced the final seven points of the game with Ingo Lindemann scoring the final kill for the game at 15-13. The Cougars hit .326 for the game to .170 for OSU.

Brigham Young opened a 6-1 lead in game three. Trailing 10-6, OSU cut the lead with a block by Esteves and Aja and a kill by Phil Kerewich to close the margin to 10-8. BYU held a 13-10 lead when a BYU error, a solo block by Fash and a kill by Kerewich tied the match at 13. Hector Lebron scored a kill to set game point at 14-13. The Buckeyes held off three game points before a block by Aja and Esteves and a kill by Pereira put OSU ahead 15-14. The Cougars held off four game points and then tied the match at 15 on a block by Millar and Michael Wall. An OSU hitting error put the Cougars up 16-15 and a kill by Casey Jennings scored the game point at 17-15. BYU hit .380 for the game to .291 for OSU. After an early 2-0 BYU lead, OSU went ahead in game four 3-2 on a Fash solo block. The rest of the game belonged to the Cougars who outscored the Buckeyes 13-1 in the rest of the game to win 15-4, winning the match 3-1. BYU hit .476 in the game to .156 for the Buckeyes.

For the match Brigham Young hit .285 to .221 for OSU. The Cougars had the edge in digs at 47 to 44 while OSU recorded 23 blocks to 18 for BYU. Leading blocker for the Cougars was Ryan Millar with 10 assist blocks. Rene’ Esteves had a total on nine (2-7) for OSU. The Buckeyes picked up five aces to three for the Cougars.

The teams return to St. John Arena Saturday night for a 7 p.m. rematch.
