ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Ohio State mens volleyball team fell short in its bid for the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament Championship as the Buckeyes (21-6) dropped a 14-16, 13-15, 13-15 match to Indiana-Purdue (23-3). Ironically, 21 days ago it was the Mastodons who lost 0-3 (14-16, 12-15, 11-15) to Ohio State. The win advances the Mastodons to the NCAA National Champoinship in two weeks at UCLA.

Ohio States Chris Fash, an all-tournament selection, had a team high 21 kills for Ohio State. Jose Rivera added 14 kills and Rene Esteves had 10. Tournament MVP Scott Lane of Indiana-Purdue scored a match-high 31 kills while all-tournament selections Javier Escobar and Jeff Ptak had 20 and 19 kills, respectively.

Ohio State opened game one with a 5-0 lead but Indiana-Purdue outscored the Buckeyes eight to one to go up 8-6. OSU tied the game at eight on an ace serve by Chris Fash. Two IPFW errors gave OSU a 10-8 lead. The Mastodons tied the game at 10 on kills by Javier Escobar and Chris Gisslen. A block by Gisslen and Ryan Perrotte put Indiana-Purdue ahead 11-10, but a block by Rene Esteves and Chris Fash tied the game at 11. IPFW held a 13-11 lead on an OSU error and a Gisslen kill. A Fort Wayne error cut the Mastodon lead to 13-12 and two Indiana-Purdue errors put the Buckeyes at game point (14-13). OSU failed to score on four game points before a block by Mike Cummings and Perrotte tied the game at 14. Gisslens kill put Indiana-Purdue up 15-14 and serving for the game. Ohio State stopped three game points but Gisslens ace serve finished the game for the Mastodons at 16-14. Indiana-Purdue hit .241 for the game while Ohio State hit .100.

Indiana-:Purdue opened game two with a 2-0 lead. Ohio State scored three straight points to take the lead back. Fort Wayne tied the game at three on a solo block by Gisslen. A kill by OSUs Jose Rivera put the Buckeyes up 4-3, but Indiana-Purdue tied the game and took a 5-4 lead. A kill and a solo block by Angel Aja and a kill by Chris Fash returned the lead to OSU at 7-5. The Mastodons responded with two kills by Scott Lane and kills by Gisslen and Escobar to take a 9-7 lead. A kill by Aja and a block by Rene Esteves and Rivera tied the game at nine and kills by Rivera and Fash put the Buckeye ahead 11-9. Two kills by Jeff Ptak tied the match at 11 for Indiana-Purdue. A Colin McMillan and Aja block returned the lead to Ohio State at 12-11. Indiana-Purdue tied the match at 12 and took a 13-12 lead on OSU errors. The Mastodons reached game point (14-12) on a block by Perrotte and Escobar. The Buckeyes stopped three game points and with a Fash kill trailed 14-13. An OSU error returned the serve to Indiana-Purdue and another Buckeye error was the winning point for Indiana-Purdue at 15-13. The Mastodons hit .327 for the game to .340 for Ohio State. Game three opened with a 5-0 Indiana-Purdue lead. Ohio State cut the lead to 5-2 on kills by Rivera and Esteves. IPFW pushed the lead to 7-2 on a solo block by Escobar and a kill by Lane. An IPFW error, a block by Esteves and Rivera and a kill by Esteves cut the Indiana-Purdue lead to 7-5. A Lane kill made it 8-5 IPFW, but Ohio State took a 9-8 lead on a kill by Fash, a block by Fash and McMillan and two IPFW errors. The Mastodons responded with a block by Ptak and Cummings, an ace serve from Gisslen and an OSU error to take an 11-9 lead. An OSU kill by Jose Pereira and an IPFW error tied the game at 11. An OSU error returned the lead to IPFW at 12-11 and a Cummings kill pushed the Mastodon lead to 13-11. Indiana-Purdue reached match point on a Ptak ace serve at 14-11. Ohio State held off six match points before an IPFW error cut the lead to 14-12. The Buckeyes stopped match points seven and eight and a Fash kill cut the IPFW margin to 14-13. The Mastodons sided out and an OSU hitting error ended the game at 15-13. Indiana-Purdue hit .440 for the game to .326 for Ohio State.

For the match Indiana-Purdue outhit Ohio State, .331 to .252, outblocked the Buckeyes, 12 to nine and had a seven-two advantage in ace serves. The Buckeyes had a 39-37 margin in digs.

Ryan Perrotte delivered a match-high 10 blocks (1-9) for Indiana-Purdue while Javier Escobar had a team-high nine digs. Setter Chris Gisslen had 65 assists and a match-high four ace serves.

Ohio States Chris Fash and Colin McMillan recorded six assist blocks each for a team-high. Jose Rivera collected a match high 10 digs for the Buckeyes.

Named to the MIVA All-Tournament Team were Chris Fash of Ohio State, Jason Fehr of Ball State, Jeff Ptak, Chris Gisslen and Javier Escobar of Indiana-Purdue. IPFWs Scott Lane was named the tournament most valuable player.
