COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-2) men’s volleyball team forced a fifth game against Brigham Young (4-0) after trailing 0-2 to the Cougars, but in the end, BYU took the fifth game 15-13 for the win and sweep of the two-matches series. Ossie Antonett and Ingo Lindemann scored a team high 27 kills each and Ryan Millar added 25 in the Cougar win. The Buckeyes rallied around the play of non-starters Greg Lehman who had a career high 33 kills and a career high 31 by Peter Olree.

After holding a 3-2 lead in game one the Buckeyes could not stop the Cougars as they outscored the Buckeyes 13-2 to win 15-5. Brigham Young hit .400 for the game while Ohio State hit .152.

Brigham Young continued to pour it on in game two taking 8-2 and 11-6 leads. The Buckeyes closed to 11-9 but the Cougars kept the lead and a kill by Ingo Lindemann ended the game at 15-11. The Cougars, with only three hitting errors had a .595 hitting percentage to OSU’s .425.

After trailing 1-0 in game three, Ohio State scored five consecutive points and expanded the lead to 7-1. Brigham Young closed to 12-10 on back-to-back errors by the Buckeyes but a kill by Pieter Olree put OSU ahead 13-10. After three sideouts a hitting error by Lindemann set up game point for OSU. The Buckeyes finished the game on a block by Colin McMillan and Angel Aja on a Lindemann attack, winning 15-10. The Buckeyes hit .455 for the game to .316 for the Cougars.

The Buckeyes opened game four going up 6-1. The Cougars closed to 6-5, but two ball handling errors, two blocks by McMilland and Aja and a kill by Olree put Ohio State ahead 11-5. BYU closed to 11-8 on two OSU errors and a kill by Ossie Antonett, but a solo block by Rene’ Esteve and two Cougar errors put OSU at game point (14-9). OSU served seven game points but could not score while Brigham Young closed the score to 14-13 on an OSU error, an ace by Millar and an overpass kill by Hector Lebron. The Cougars tied the match at 14 on a Antonett kill. Ohio State went ahead 15-14 on a BYU error and served three game points before a Lindemann hitting error ended the game for OSU at 16-14. In the rallying scoring fifth game the squads played even to eight-all. A kill by Greg Lehman and a hitting error by BYU put OSU up 10-8 and forced a Cougar timeout. A Millar kill put the score at 10-9. Lehman countered with a kil to put the lead at 11-9. Lindemann’s kill closed the lead to 11-10 but a Olree kill put OSU ahead 12-10. A kill by Lindeman closed the OSU lead to 12-11 and a block by Mac Wilson and Ossie Antonett on a Jose Pereiora attack tied the match at 12. OSU’s Olree put the Buckeyes up 13-12, but a kill by Antonett tied the game at 13. BYU closed the match with back-to-back blocks by Casey Jennings and Mac Wilson and Wilson and Antonett to win the game 15-13 and the match 3-2. The Cougars hit .294 for the game, but scored four points on blocks, while OSU hit .300.

For the match Brigham Young hit .401 to .365 for the Buckeyes. The Cougars outblocked OSU 17-13 with Mac Wilson having a match high 10 assist blocks. The Buckeyes did edge BYU in digs, 43 to 34 with OSU’s Olree and BYU’s Lindemann recording a match-high 10 each.

Ohio State continues at home next Thursday (Jan. 21) when they open defense of the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association regular season championship when they host Ball State at 7 p.m.
