COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-6 overall, 3-3 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-27, 30-23, 26-30, 31-29) decision at No. 8 Ball State (11-2, 5-0) Friday night in Muncie, Ind. Ohio State’s Mark Greaves (So., Fenton, Mo.) scored a match-high 24.5 points for the Buckeyes with Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 20.5. Each had a team-high 19 kills with Greaves adding four ace serves and three assist blocks and Wauligman, three assist blocks. Cardinal Jary Delgado had a team-high 22 points for Ball State with a match-high 22 kills. Zoran Grabovac contributed 17 points with 15 kills, a solo and two assist blocks.

Ball State built a 20-16 lead in game one and held a 24-21 margin before an Adam Pedersen (Sr., Muskego, Wis.) kill and a Greaves-Pedersen block cut the score to 24-23. Ball State’s Evan Berg made it 25-23 with a kill. Buckeye kills by Andy Cole (So., Glendale, Wis.) and Greaves tied the game at 25. Ball State regained the lead with a Grabovac kill and an ace serve by Berg (27-25). OSU cut the lead to 27-26 with a Scott Spurlock (Jr., Stow, Ohio) kill. A Cardinal block by Keith Schunzel and Grabovac made it 28-26. Cole responded with a kill (28-27). A Nick Meyer kill and an OSU error closed out the game at 30-27. Ball State hit .333 in the game to .318 for Ohio State.

Ohio State held a 5-4 lead in game two before Ball State mounted a 12-2 run to open a 16-7 lead. The Cardinals held the lead, winning the game, 30-23. BSU hit .412 for the game to .225 for the Buckeyes. In game three, Ball State opened up a 6-2 lead but OSU tied the game at 11 with a Greaves kill. Tied at 18, a Cardinal service error, kills by Pedersen and Greaves and a Cardinal error put the Buckeyes ahead 22-18. A Buckeye error and a Cole kill made it 23-19. A BSU error and a Grabovac kill moved the score to 24-20. A Cardinal error and a Berg kill moved the score to 25-21. A Delgado kill and a Schunzel solo block cut the lead to two at 25-23. A Ball State error and a Schunzel kill advanced the score to 26-24. Two BSU errors put OSU’s lead at 28-24. Consecutive Delgado kills made it 28-26. Buckeye kills by Wauligman and Greaves closed out the game at 30-26. Ohio State hit .310 for the game to .250 for Ball State.

Ball State held a 13-9 lead in game four. Buckeye kills by Brett Hamilton (Jr., Rockville, Md.) and Wauligman and back-to-back ace serves from Greaves tied the game at 13. Ball State responded with two kills from Grabovac and one from Nick Meyer to take a 16-13 lead. Two Wauligman kill cut the lead to 16-15 but an OSU error made it 17-15. Another Wauligman kill and a Pedersen-Wauligman block tied the game at 17. The squads exchange points to reach 29-all. Two Buckeye errors gave Ball State a 31-29 win. The Cardinals hit .381 for the game to .209 for the Buckeyes.

For the match Ball State hit .342 to OSU’s .266. The Cardinals had a 76-71 kill advantage. OSU served up a 5-3 margin in aces with OSU’s Greaves recording four. The Buckeyes gave up 11 service errors to 10 for Ball State. Defensively, the Cardinals had a 61-51 edge in digs while the Buckeyes had a 10.5 to eight advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Pedersen recorded a match-high six blocks with one solo and five assists. Cardinal setter Schunzel and OSU’s Peckham had 64 and 61 assists, respectively.

Ohio State returns home for a 7 p.m., Saturday match against Findlay in St. John Arena.

BUCKEYE MATCH NOTES:

Mark Greaves with 19 kills equaled his career-high set against Loyola earlier this season.

Mark Greaves equaled his career-high of four ace serves tonight. He set the mark with four against Brigham Young (1-23).

Brett Hamilton had a season-high three kills against Ball State. His previous high was two in two matches.

Mike Wauligman scored a season-high 19 kills against Ball State. His previous high the season was 14 at Lewis.

Andy Cole had a career-high 12 digs against the Cardinals. His previous high was 10 against Quincy in 2003.
