COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (8-5 overall, 3-2 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team defeated Springfield (4-6), 3-1 (30-27, 23-30, 30-18, 30-18) in the consolation match of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Mass. Buckeyes Mark Greaves (So., Fenton, Mo.) and Andy Cole (So., Glendale, Wis.) recorded 18 points each with Greaves scoring a team-high 16 kills and added a solo block and two assist blocks and Cole collecting 12 kills, four ace serves and four assist blocks. Springfield College, the current Division III top-ranked team, was led by Brandon Mueller’s 23.5 points with Nick Beer adding 11. Mueller had a match-high 22 kills adding an ace serve and one assist block with Beer collecting eight kills, one ace serve and four assist blocks.

With game one tied at ten, Ohio State took a 13-10 lead with a Adam Pedersen (Sr., Muskego, Wis.) kill and solo blocks by Mark Peckham (Sr., London, Ontario) and Greaves. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to five at 20-15. The Pride cut the margin down to two at 24-22 with a Robert Soris ace serve. A kill by Greaves and a Springfield error opened up a 26-22 Buckeye lead. A Mueller kill cut the margin to 26-23. Kills by Sam Stevens (So., Miami, Fla.) and Chris Hosley made it 27-24. A Springfield service error made it 28-24. Kills by Ricky Albano and Mark Peckham (Sr., London, Ontario) gave OSU a 29-25 leading serving game points. The Price stopped two game points with a Mueller kill and a Matt Smith ace serve to cut the lead to 29-27. A Greaves kill ended the game for OSU at 30-27. Ohio State hit .467 for the game to .242 for Springfield College. In game two, Springfield broke a six-all tie with a three-point run off a Mueller ace serve, a block by Hosley and Beer and a Beer kill for a 9-6 lead. The Buckeyes would close to within one at 11-10 from a Pride error. Springfield scored the next three points with a solo block by Soris, a Buckeye error and a Mueller kill for a 14-10 lead. The Pride held the lead, winning the game, 30-23, with a Kevin Lail kill. Springfield hit .341 for the game to .189 for the Buckeyes.

Tied at one in game three, a Buckeye kill by Peckham and a Peckham-Pedersen block gave OSU a 3-1 lead. A Mueller kill cut the lead to 3-2 before a Pride service error, a Scott Spurlock (Jr., Stow, Ohio) kill and a Springfield error made the OSU lead, 6-2. The Buckeyes held the lead and won the game, 30-18 on a Cole kill. Ohio State hit .652 for the game to .077 for Springfield.

Ohio State broke a one-all tie with a five-point run starting with a Pride service error. Kills by Cole and Stevens, a Cole ace serve and a block by Stevens and Pedersen to open a 6-1 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead and with a Pride error closed the game out at 30-18. The Buckeyes hit .385 for the game to Springfield’s .037.

For the game, Ohio State hit .397 to Springfield’s .197. The Buckeyes had a 64-53 margin in kills and out served the Pride, seven to five. OSU’s Cole collected a match-high four ace serves in the contest. The Buckeyes gave up 16 service errors to 14 for the Pride. Defensively, OSU had a 39-26 advantage in digs with Pride’s Eduardo Stawinski recording a match-high 10 digs. At the net, Ohio State had a 17.5 to eight margin in team blocks. OSU’s Peckham produced a match-high 10 blocks against Springfield with three solos and seven assists. Peckham picked up a match-high 55 assists while Springfield’s Soris’ 39.

BUCKEYE MATCH NOTES:

Adam Pedersen was named to the Volleyball Hall of Fame Classic All-Tournament Team.

Mark Peckham had a career blocking match against Springfield. He recorded career-highs of three solos, seven assists and 10 total blocks against the Pride. His previous high in solo blocks was two, three times, the last against UC-Irvine Friday night. His previous high in assist blocks was six, three times, the last against Juniata this season. His previous high in total blocks was six, in eight matches, the last against Juniata this season. Peckham recorded a career-high 12.5 points against the Pride with four kills, two aces, three solo blocks and seven assist blocks. His previous high was 10 against Pacific in 2002.

Mark Greaves’ solo block against Springfield equaled his season high set again Loyola.

Sam Stevens, in his third start of the season recorded a career-high nine digs against Springfield. His previous high was six, twice, the last time against D’Youville this season.

Andy Cole served four winners against Springfield for a career-high. His previous best was three against Loyola this season.
