COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-2) men’s volleyball squad, with a match-high 16 kills from Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) and 12 from Adam Pedersen (Jr., Muskego, Wis.), defeated the Pride of Springfield College (5-2) 30-20, 30-21, 30-23 Saturday night in St. John Arena. Greg Lardo (Sr., Hamburg, N.Y.) scored a team-high 12 kills for Springfield. The two team meet against at 7 p.m., Sunday to complete the two match series.

Springfield held a 4-1 lead in game one when a Pride error and a Trantow kill cut the margin to 4-3. A Largo kill made it 5-3. The Buckeyes tied the game with kills by Mark Greaves (Fr., Fenton, Mo.) and Brett Hamilton (So., Rockville, Md.). Back-to-back ace serves by Mark Peckham (Jr., London, Ontario) and a Springfield error gave OSU a 9-5 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead a 28-20 when a Springfield error and a Hamilton kill ended the game 30-20. Ohio State hit .433 for the game to .238 for Springfield.

Tied at six in game two, Springfield took an 8-6 lead with a block by Lardo and Ricky Albano (So., Spencerport, N.Y.) and a Matt Smith (So., Midlothian, Va.) kill. Ohio State tailed 12-10 when a Hamilton kill and a Springfield error tied the game at 12-all. Tied at 16, a Pedersen kill and a Trantow ace serve put OSU ahead, 18-16, as the Pride called time out. OSU continued the run with a Greaves kill, a Greaves and Pedersen block and a Springfield error to take a 21-16 lead. The Pride cut the lead to 23-20, but a Hamilton kill and two Springfield errors opened the Buckeye lead to 26-20. A Buckeye error made it 26-21. OSU closed out the game with a Hamilton kill, two Springfield error and a Trantow kill to win the game 30-21. The Buckeyes hit .346 for the game to .100 for the Pride. Ohio State broke a two-all tie in game three with two Trantow kills, one from Greaves and a Springfield error to take a 6-2 lead. Leading 24-20, an Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis.) kill, an ace serve by Mark Lehman (Sr., Galena, Ohio) and a Trantow kill made it 27-20. A Jacob Voorhires (So., Rochester, N.Y.) kill but the margin to 27-21. A Pedersen kill made it 28-21. A Buckeye error and an ace serve from Mark Schlabach (Jr., Clarence, N.Y.) cut the lead to five at 28-23. A Trantow kill set match point at 29-23. OSU closed out the match with a Pedersen-Graves block for a 30-23 game win. Ohio State hit .457 for the game to .152 for Springfield.

Ohio State hit a season-high .418 for the match to .155 for Springfield. The Buckeyes produced a 54-29 kill margin. OSU recorded five ace serves to one for Springfield. OSU’s Trantow and Peckham had two aces each. The Buckeyes had 15 service errors to 13 for the Pride. Ohio State had a 23-13 margin in digs with OSU’s Greaves and Stuart Katz (So., Port Washington, N.Y.) producing a match high six digs. At the net, Springfield out blocked Ohio State, 10.5 to five. Pride’s Lardo and Peter Fillat (Fr., Florence, Italy) and OSU’s Pedersen shared match-high honors with four assist blocks each. Buckeye setter Peckham had 42 assists in the match to 15 for Springfield’s Tucker Short (Sr., Brockport, N.Y.).

BUCKEYE NOTES

Brett Hamilton hit .667 against Springfield for his season high. He had eight kills with no errors in 12 attempts. His previous best the season was.583 against St. Francis (7-012). His eight kills was a season-high with his previous best, seven, against St. Francis.

Adam Pedersen hit .846 against Springfield to equal his career-high set at Lewis on Feb. 24, 2001. In that match he had 11 kills, no errors in 13 attempts. In the Springfield match, he had 12 kills, one error in 13 attempts. His 12 kills is his season-high. His previous mark was 11 against George Mason.
