COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-4 overall, 2-2 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team needed only 71 minutes to blank the Lakers of Mercyhurst (4-5, 0-3), 30-20, 30-24, 30-25, Tuesday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Mark Greaves (So., Fenton, Mo.) recorded a match-high 18.5 points for the Buckeyes with a match-high 16 kills, two ace serves and an assist block. Dave Schmidl of Mercyhurst had a team-high 14.5 points for the Lakers, recording a team-high 12 kills and adding an ace serve, a solo block and an assist block.

In game one, Mercyhurst broke a five-all tie with a block by T.J. Wilson and Schmidl to hold a 6-5 lead. Buckeye kills by Andy Cole (So., Glendale, Wis.), Scott Spurlock (Jr., Stow, Ohio) and Greaves and a block by Spurlock and Mark Peckham (Sr., London, Ontario) opened a 9-6 OSU lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to 26-19 and with kills by Cole and Greaves and a Laker error served game point at 29-19. A Buckeye service error made it 29-20. Cole closed out the game with a kill at 30-20. Ohio State hit .286 for the game to .053 for Mercyhurst.

With Ohio State leading 6-4 in game two, Buckeye kills by Layne Dreven (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Cole and a Laker error gave OSU a 9-4 lead. Ohio State held the lead the rest of the game and at 28-24 a Spurlock kill and a Laker error ended the game at 30-24. The Buckeyes hit .407 in game two to .053 for the Lakers.

Mercyhurst held a 7-6 lead in game three before a Laker error tied the game at seven. A Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill, a Mercyhurst error followed by a kill by Greaves gave OSU a 10-7 lead. A Buckeye error and a Laker kill by Justin Waas cut the lead to 10-9. OSU’s Greaves countered with a kill and a Laker error made it 12-9, OSU. Service errors by both teams made the score 13-10. The Laker service error began a six-point run for Ohio State. Assist blocks by Dreven and Wauligman and Dreven and Peckham was followed with a Dreven kill. Peckham added a solo block and a kill to give OSU an 18-10 lead. Trailing, 22-15, Mercyhurst with a kill and solo block by Schmidl, an ace serve from Nate Sample and a Buckeye error cut the lead to 22-19. Ohio State held the three-point lead at 27-24 before back-to-back Laker errors made it match point at 29-24. Schmidl stopped the first match point with a kill (29-25) but Spurlock recorded his seventh kill of the match to end the game at 30-25. The Buckeyes hit .323 for the game to .294 for Mercyhurst. For the match, Ohio State hit .337 to .167 for Mercyhurst. OSU had a 47-32 margin in kills while each team recorded three ace serves. OSU’s Greaves served up a match-high two. The Buckeyes gave up 15 service errors to 14 for the Lakers. Defensively, Mercyhurst had a 19-17 advantage in digs with Laker Schmidl picking up a match-high six. At the net, each squad recorded six team blocks with OSU’s Peckham picking up a match-high four total blocks with one solo and three assists. Peckham recorded a match-high 41 assists while Laker Dan Kick had 24.

The Buckeyes will host Loyola (Chicago) (6-3, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday night in St. John Arena.
