%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio State’s archrival the Wolverines pulled out a tough match against the Buckeyes, 4-3, Saturday at the Stickney Tennis Center. Ohio State falls to 11-9, 5-4 in the Big Ten and Michigan improves to 13-5, 5-4 in the Big Ten.%^$

%^$The match began with an Ohio State upset in doubles. Buckeyes Phil Metz (Fr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Jon Scale (Fr., Actworth, Ga./Harrison) won the first doubles match against Chris Shaya and Danny McCain, 8-3, at the No. 3 position. The No. 34-ranked duo of Andrew Carlson (Jr., Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Chris Porter (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) secured the doubles point with a win over Michigan’s Matt Wright and Henry Beam, 9-8.%^$

%^$Ohio State’s singles wins came from Porter and Metz. Porter took out John Long at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-4. Porter leads the Big Ten in overall singles wins with a record of 33-13, 7-2 in the Big Ten. Metz defeated the Big Ten’s co-men’s tennis athlete of the week Henry Beam, 7-5, 6-0, ending Beam’s seven-game winning streak. Metz’s record is 24-11. The match seemed to be won by Ohio State when Buckeye Bob Wellstein (Jr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) served for the match and team win at 5-3 in the third set against Zachary Held. Held broke Wellstein’s serve and eventually won the match 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.%^$

%^$”We played a team that was better than us today and it was dead even,” assistant coach Dave Schilling said. “We were tied at 3-3 and it came down to Wellstein’s match. He has pulled us out of trouble before but wasn’t able to do it this time. While coach Tucker and I are disappointed by the loss we’re encouraged to see a team that hasn’t had much success in the past few years come out and give everything they’ve got. The team is gaining confidence in their ability to win. Tomorrow is a big test. If they can bounce back from today’s loss with a win tomorrow then we will see what this team is really made of.”%^$

%^$The Buckeyes will face Michigan State tomorrow at the Stickney Tennis Center at 1 p.m.%^$
