COLUMBUS, Ohio-The No. 44-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team lost to Illinois, 6-1, at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill. on Sunday. The Buckeyes fall to 10-7, 4-2 in the Big Ten and Illinois moves to 16-3, 7-0 in the Big Ten.
Ohio State secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. OSU’s No. 35-ranked duo of Chris Porter (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and Andrew Carlson (Jr., Gambrills, Md./Arundel) upset No. 15 Jeff Laski and Jamal Parker, 8-2. Buckeyes Derek DeFalco (Jr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and Bob Wellstein (Jr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) defeated Matt Synder and Mike Kosta, 9-7, to capture the doubles point.
In singles, Ohio State’s Carlson and Phil Metz (Fr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) competed in tough three-set matches before losing. The Buckeyes are back on the road next weekend playing Indiana on April 15 and Purdue the following day.
