COLUMBUS, Ohio– Members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team entered the prestigious Milwaukee Tennis Classic and brought home impressive finishes. The Classic, the longest running collegiate invitational tournament at 26-consecutive years, was played at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee, Wis.

OSU’s doubles team of Bob Wellstein (Sr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Derek DeFalco (Sr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) won four-consecutive matches before falling to the team of Brandon Currie and Jimmy Borendane of Butler, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, in the championship finals.

The Buckeyes’ B.J. Munroe (Sr., Freeport, Bahamas/Freeport) also entered the doubles draw. He and partner Fernando Garcia of Western Michigan University fell to the Currie/Borendane duo in the opening round, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5.

On the singles side of the net, all three Buckeyes entered the competition with Wellstein capturing the consolation championship after falling in the first round of play. Wellstein defeated Ryan Tomlinson of Western Michigan, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, in the finals.

DeFalco and Munroe won their opening matches but both fell in the second. Munroe lost to the No. 2 seeded Alex Bose of Duke, 3-6, 1-6, while DeFalco was knocked-out of the tournament by Western Michigan’s Steve Pillon, 4-6, 5-7.

The remaining Buckeyes travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. Saturday to play in the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Both Phillip Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Chris Porter (Sr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) are strong contenders for the crown as both were seeded in the tournament No. 5 and 6, respectively.
