%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s tennis team heads off to Bloomington, Ind., fired up to compete in%^$ the Big Ten Championships, April 27-30. The Buckeyes tied Michigan and Purdue for the No. 4 spot in the%^$ regular-season Big Ten standings with a 6-4 league record. Big Ten tie-breaking rules placed OSU in the No.%^$ 6-seed position for the tournament. Ohio State will open with Penn State Thursday.%^$

%^$ New Rankings
%^$ The Intercollegiate Tennis Association committee ranked Ohio State No. 39 this week. The Buckeyes’%^$ overall record is 12-9, 6-4 in the Big Ten.%^$

%^$ The duo of Andrew Carlson and Chris Porter moved up two spots to be tied at No. 32.%^$

%^$ OSU Sweeps Spartans, 7-0
%^$ The last time Ohio State defeated the Spartans was six years ago during the 1993-94 campaign. The%^$ Buckeyes swept doubles and singles last Sunday in Columbus.%^$

%^$ Most notably, Vince Ng snapped a five-match losing streak with a win over Francisco Trinidad, 7-6(5),%^$ 6-1. Metz continued on a four-match winning streak.%^$

%^$ Heartbreaking Loss
%^$ Michigan defeated the Buckeyes 4-3 win at Ohio State April 22. The Buckeyes won the doubles point.%^$

%^$ Chris Porter and Phil Metz provided wins for Ohio State in singles. Porter defeated John Long, 6-2, 6-4. Metz%^$ defeated the co-athlete of the week in the Big Ten, Henry Beam, 7-5, 6-0. Buckeye Bob Wellstein served for the%^$ match and team win at 5-3 in the third set in singles when the teams were tied at 3-3. Wellstein lost his serve to%^$ Zachary Held and eventually the match, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.%^$

%^$ Head Coach Ty Tucker
%^$ In Ty Tucker’s first season as head coach, Ohio State is 12-9, 6-4 in the Big Ten heading into the Big Ten%^$ Championships. Tucker’s 1999-00 Buckeyes entered this season with a team ranked No. 58. The team has yet%^$ to fall below that point. Ohio State has maintained a standing in the Top 50 for seven-consecutive weeks.%^$

%^$ By the Numbers
%^$ The 1999-00 squad has won 66 singles matches and have lost 59. The doubles team is 40-21. The%^$ Buckeyes have won the doubles point 14 out of 19 matches. The six conference victories are the most since a%^$ 6-4 campaign in 1994-95 and matches the previous four years in total Big Ten wins (6).%^$

%^$ On the Double
%^$ The No. 34 duo of Andrew Carlson and Chris Porter first entered the college tennis scene by winning the%^$ prestigious Penn Invitational (9/25/99). The most recent notable win was over No. 15 Jeff Laski and Jamal%^$ Parker of Illinois (4/9/00).%^$

%^$ Derek DeFalco and Bob Wellstein have teamed this year to produce a 7-2 record in the Big Ten and 23-7%^$ overall mark in the No. 3 doubles position.%^$

%^$ Can you say upset?
%^$ The No. 39 Ohio State men’s tennis team upset No. 33 Purdue April 16, 4-3. The win against No. 51%^$ South Alabama (6-1, 1/22/00) was the first time in almost four years Ohio State defeated a nationally-ranked%^$ team in the Top 55.%^$

%^$ Team Ranking in 1999-00
%^$ The team has not been ranked this high (39th) since May 3, 1995 (39). Prior to this season the last time%^$ Ohio State men’s tennis was ranked was the final ranking of 1995 at No. 46.%^$

%^$ OSU making it Big
%^$ The win this season against Penn State (4-3, 2/26/00) represented the first win in the Big Ten since the%^$ 1996-97 season. The last time Ohio State defeated Penn State was March 2, 1996.%^$

%^$ Eye of the Tiger
%^$ Chris Porter has been busy lately. Porter leads the Big Ten in singles wins with 34 wins and 13 losses,%^$ 8-2 in the Big Ten. Last year Porter’s record was 20-20, 0-10 in the Big Ten. Porter has even surpassed his%^$ career totals of 21-10, 5-16 in the Big Ten from the previous two years.%^$

%^$ Metz’s winning Streak
%^$ Freshman Phil Metz has won the last four matches played. Metz defeated Ian Arons, IU (5-7, 6-3, 6-3)%^$ April 15. The next day Metz won against Purdue’s Andrew Wakefield (7-5, 6-1). The next weekend Metz took%^$ out the co-athlete of the week in the Big Ten Henry Beam (MI), 7-5, 6-0. In the match against MSU Metz%^$ defeated Ivica Primorac, 6-2, 6-4. Metz’s record is 25-11, 7-3 in the Big Ten.%^$

%^$ Ng Snaps Losing Streak

%^$ Carlson Improves
%^$ Andrew Carlson has come a long way from last season’s performance, although he was considered by%^$ the coach to be the one bright spot of the 1998-99 season. Carlson’s record is 20-16 overall, 3-6 in the Big Ten%^$ compared to last year’s 14-17 overall, 5-6 in the Big Ten.%^$

%^$ Scouting Penn State
%^$ Penn State is tied for No. 10 in the Big Ten with an overall record of 5-15, 1-9 in the Big Ten. On April 23%^$ Michigan defeated Penn State, 6-1. The only Lions’ victory came from Jamie Gresh over Henry Beam, 6-2, 7-6.
