COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 26 Ohio State men’s tennis team (19-7, 10-2 Big Ten) defeated the No. 3 seed Michigan, 4-0, Saturday in semifinal action at the Big Ten Championship in Champaign, Ill. The Buckeyes, the No. 2 seed of the tournament, advanced to the championship match and will face the No. 1 seed Illinois Sunday at 1 p.m. EST in Champaign. OSU is 1-1 against the Illini in the Big Ten tournament under sixth year head coach Ty Tucker, and is aiming for its first conference title since 2001.

In doubles action, the Buckeyes captured the lone point with wins on the Nos. 1 and 3 courts. The OSU tandem of Joey Atas (So., Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Drew Eberly (Fr., Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) wrapped up first for the squad with an 8-2 win over Michigan’s David Anving and Vinny Gossain at No. 3.

The junior duo of Scott Green (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales) clinched the doubles point for Ohio State after an 8-6 performance at No. 1. Green and Wilson, ranked No. 5 in the nation, topped Brian Hung and Matko Maravic.

In singles competition, the Buckeyes tallied three straight victories at the Nos. 1, 3 and 5 spots for the 4-0 shutout against the Wolverines. Sophomore Devin Mullings (Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prepatory), ranked No. 57 in singles, recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over No. 79 Maravic at No. 1. Freshman Eberly followed Mullings after a 6-1, 7-6 (3) second set tie-break and tallied Ohio State’s third point.

Atas, ranked No. 59 in singles, clinched the match win for the Buckeyes after a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Josef Fischer at the No. 3 spot. Atas, Eberly and Mullings are 2-0, respectively, in singles action at the 2005 Big Ten Championship.

The win over Michigan marked the second consecutive season Ohio State advanced to the championship match and third under Tucker. The Buckeyes reached the title match last season and during the 2001 campaign. Last year at the tournament, the OSU squad fell to the Illini, 4-1, and in 2001 they captured the Big Ten title with a 4-2 victory over Illinois.
