COLUMBUS, Ohio– Three Ohio State men’s tennis players entered play at the University of Kentucky’s Winterslam 2001 tournament with two players making the semifinal round. The tournament, held at Lexington, Ky., features players from host Kentucky, OSU, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State, and is played Jan. 20-21.
Vincent Ng (So., Broadview Heights, Ohio/University School) and Brenton Contini (Fr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) advanced to the semifinals and will play Sunday for a chance to meet each other in the finals set for later in the afternoon. Ben Kirksey (Fr., Canton, Ohio/McKinley) is the third member of the team competing and remains in the tournament as well.
Ng, the Big Ten Indoor Champion in the No. 7-9 singles division, has lost only three games in the tournament. He won his first round match with a 6-0, 6-0 score over A. Hernandez of Morehead State before defeating Sanji Jeram of DePaul, 6-3, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.
Contini survived a first round marathon when he defeated Dan Bennett of DePaul, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. Contini advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Karim Benmansour of Kentucky. Contini will meet Jevgenij Cariov of DePaul in the semifinals.
Kirksey won his first round match, 6-4, 6-1, over Alvin Cheng of Eastern Kentucky but fell to Cariov, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Kiksey is still in tournament action and will face Benmansour in the semifinals of the fifth through eighth place bracket. The winner of the Kirksey/Benmansour semifinal will meet the winner of Jeram/Schmid to determine fifth place.
All three Buckeyes will return to the court at 9 a.m. Sunday.
