COLUMBUS, Ohio Justin Kronauge, a sophomore on the Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week the conference announced Tuesday. This is Kronauge’s second weekly league honor and fourth overall for the No. 2 Buckeyes this season.
Kronauge last claimed the award Feb. 13. That honor was the second of three-consecutive laurels claimed by the Buckeyes. Freshman Matt Allare was the weekly honoree Feb. 6 and senior Drew Eberly was the recipient Feb. 20.
Kronauge won four matches this past weekend to lead Ohio State to a 2-0 record in the Big Ten and a 14-1 overall mark. The native of Dayton, Ohio, garnered two wins at the top singles spot and a win at both No. 2 and No. 1 doubles against No. 47 Iowa and Minnesota, respectively. Against the Hawkeyes, Kronauge teamed with Eberly to knock off the duo of Gregory Holm and Walker Grimes, 8-3, at the No. 2 spot. He then went on to defeat Bart van Monsjou of Iowa, 3-6, 7-6 (10-6).
Against the Gophers, Kronauge paired with Eberly again, this time at No. 1 doubles, to earn an 8-0 win over Raoul Schwark and Tobias Wernet. Kronauge ended his perfect weekend with a No. 1 singles victory over Schwark in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The Buckeyes will step out of conference action to take on No. 26 LSU at noon Sunday in the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. Ohio State will remain on the road to play a doubleheader March 19 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., against The Citadel and Coastal Carolina at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
