COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite being at the site of their last Big Ten victory, the Ohio State Buckeyes were defeated Saturday by the Wisconsin Badgers, 6-1, at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. OSU drops to 6-16 (0-9 Big Ten) while Wisconsin is now 5-13 (1-6).

The Badgers got on the board early, winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. After wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 4, Wisconsin had the four points necessary for the win.

The lone Buckeye to pick up a victory was Bob Wellstein (So., Perrysburg, Ohio). He nailed down his fourth Big Ten singles win of the year in defeating UW’s Justin Baker 6-4, 6-4. Wellstein is now tied for the team lead in conference victories.

The score could have been much closer had the Badgers not snuck out two close three-setters after the match had been clinched. In the marquee matchup at No. 1 singles, No. 37 Mark Loughrin and No. 79 Chris Porter (So., Canton, Ohio) battled for over three hours, with Loughrin scratching out a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (9) victory. Taking even longer were UW’s Danny Westerman and Ben Basil (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio). If not for the advent of tiebreakers, this No. 5 singles match might very well still be going on. Westerman and Basil went the distance, with Westerman coming away with a 7-6 (7), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4) victory.

OSU was looking for its first conference win since April 5, 1997, a 4-3 victory at Wisconsin. Its next match comes Sunday at Iowa. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT.
