COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 26 Ohio State men’s tennis team (20-9, 10-3 Big Ten) fell, 4-2, to No. 14 Tennessee (16-8, 6-5 Southeastern) Sunday in NCAA second round action at the Varsity Outdoor Courts in Knoxville, Tenn. The Buckeyes finished the season 20-9 overall, 10-3 in Big Ten play, while the Volunteers advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 and will face the winner of the California/UCLA match May 21 in College Station, Texas.

In doubles action, Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the match score after they captured the point at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. The sophomore pair of Chris Klingemann (Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent) and Devin Mullings (Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prepatory) fell, 8-1, to Tennessee’s Mark Dietrich and Morgan Wilson at No. 2. Ohio State’s Joey Atas (So., Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Drew Eberly (Fr., Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) kept the Buckeyes alive with an 8-6 win over Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel at the No. 3 position.

With the doubles point on the line, all eyes turned to the No. 1 spot. The junior duo of Scott Green (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales), ranked No. 5 in the ITA poll, and No. 9 Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers were knotted at 7-all. The match was forced into a super tie-break in which the Volunteers upset the Buckeyes, 9-8 (7), for the 1-0 Tennessee lead. In singles, the Volunteers put their second point on the board after Buckeye Green, fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Atas retaliated with the squad’s first point of the day after a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3. Atas went undefeated in the post-season with five singles wins. The next court went in favor of Tennessee as freshman Eberly fell, 6-4, 6-4, to Hensel.

Buckeye junior Wilson tallied Ohio State’s last point, followed by the Volunteers’ match-clinching win at the No. 1 spot. No. 54 Dietrich upset No. 40 Mullings, 6-3, 7-6 (6), to advance to the NCAA Round of 16.

Next up, three Buckeyes compete at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship May 25 in College Station, Texas. The duo of Green and Wilson, a No. 5-8 tournament seed, aims for their third national doubles title this season, while Mullings will compete in singles competition.
