COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State men’s tennis team, ranked No. 32 in the nation, fell in a closely contested match, 5-2, with No. 33 Notre Dame at Jesse Owens West Recreational Center Saturday. The loss dropped OSU’s record to 2-1 on the year while the Irish improved to 3-1 overall.
“We have to convert on the chances we have during the match,” Ty Tucker, OSU head coach, said. “We were up in No. 1 doubles but lost momentum and it blew up in our faces. We lost the (doubles) point but tied the match with great playing at (No.) 1-3 singles. What cost us was our (No.) 4-6 singles. Their guys were battle-tested this year and our guys were not.”
In the opening of the match, each team scored an 8-4 doubles win with Phillip Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Chris Porter (Sr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) winning at No. 3. In the deciding bout at No. 1 doubles, the No. 38 duo of Aaron Talarico and Javier Taborga defeated Andrew Carlson (Sr., Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Jonathon Scale (So., Acworth, Ga./Harrison), 9-7, to claim the doubles point for UND.
Carlson and No. 38 Metz secured victories for OSU in singles with Metz claiming a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Taborga at No. 2 singles. Carlson won his match with a close 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory but it was not enough as UND won the No. 1 and 4-6 singles. Porter fell in one of the closest matches of the day, a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 loss to No. 95 Casey Smith.
OSU will return to action at 10 a.m. Saturday when it plays host to West Virginia at the Columbus Racquet Club on Bethel Road. The Buckeyes also will battle Northern Illinois at 6 p.m. at the Racquet Club.
