COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State men’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 58 Northwestern in its regular season finale Sunday at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. With the loss, the Buckeyes fell to 17-7 overall and 8-2 in Big Ten play, while the Wildcats improved to 11-11 overall, 6-4 in the conference. The Buckeyes finished the Big Ten regular season second behind No. 1 Illinois.

In doubles action, Northwestern tallied the lone point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Buckeye sophomores Chris Klingemann (Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent) and Devin Mullings (Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prepatory) were the first to go down for the squad. Klingemann and Mullings fell, 8-5, to Adam Schaechterle and Christian Tempke on the No. 2 court. Juniors Scott Green (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales) kept the Buckeyes alive and evened the doubles score with an 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot.

The doubles point came down to the No. 3 spot where Wildcats Justin Hoeveler and Willy Lock defeated the OSU tandem of Joey Atas (So., Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Dennis Mertens (Jr., Braaschaatt, Belgium/Koninkiljk).

In singles competition, Buckeyes Atas and Wilson put Ohio State’s two points on the board. Wilson tied the match score a 1-all after a 6-3, 6-1 straight set performance over Matt Christian at No. 5. Atas broke the Wildcats and put the Buckeyes up, 2-1, after he defeated Chuck Perrin, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot.

Northwestern would take the next four points and the match win with victories at the Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 singles spots. That marked the first time the Buckeyes fell to the Wildcats since the 1999 season.

Next up, the squad travels April 28-May 1 for competition at the Big Ten Championship in Champaign, Ill. The Buckeyes will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and will receive a bye in the first round. OSU will face the No. 7/10 winner in second round action Friday. Last season, the OSU squad finished second behind Illinois in league play and placed second at the Big Ten tournament after a 4-1 loss to the Illini in the championship match.
