COLUMBUS, Ohio– Juniors Scott Green and Ross Wilson, both members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team, captured the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Summer title Tuesday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind. The OSU tandem defeated fellow Buckeye sophomores Joey Atas and Chris Klingemann, 8-2, in the final doubles match. In the singles championship match Klingemann, the 5-8 seed, fell to the No. 3 seed Minnesota’s Avery Ticer, 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-2).
Three Buckeyes were featured in the semifinal round of the singles competition. Klingemann (Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent) topped Atas (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), the No. 1 seed, 7-5, 6-7 (10-8). During the tournament, the third set was played as a single game to 10 points. Devin Mullings (So. Freeport, Bahamas/Florida Prep) fell, 6-3, 6-3, to Ticer.
The singles and doubles champions earned wild cards into the ITA All American Championship Oct. 1-10 in Chattanooga, Tenn., while the finalists earned wild cards into the qualifying tournaments.
The ITA National Summer Championships, presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, which was played at 20 regional sites throughout the country last month. Over 15,000 men and women have competed in circuit events since it began in 1993. This is the 10th anniversary of the national championships, which were added to the circuit in 1994.
